I just want to see what everyone uses on there dogs for fleas.  We have been feeding him garlic powder and bathing him with flea shampoo but we need more.  I was thinking of buying K-9 advantix.  What do you think about it?  Frontline doesn't work for Toby.  Anything else that works well will be considered.  We need something for ticks as well as mosquitos.  We have pulled 3 ticks from our visit to G-mas camping site and those darn mosquitos are in full swing this year.  And of couse the main cause for the flea treatment are those itchy bugs.

Any and all help will be much appriciated.  Thanks Teri aka Toby's momma

Are you treating more than just your dog? To help cut down on/or get rid of fleas you need to also treat the areas where they live- besides on the dog. Wash bedding where the dog sleeps frequently, vaccuum the carpets 2-3 times per week and empty your bags. Comb the dog with a flea comb. Bathe the dog frequently. A bit of dawn (dish soap) and water in a cup is great for killling any live fleas you comb off the dog. If they are coming from outside, it might be necessary to treat your yard too.

Because of mosquitos.... do you have your dog on monthly heartworm preventitive?

Fortunately I haven't had to use any flea chemicals so far (knock on wood) and seem to keep them at bay with the steps above. Good luck! BTW, cute pup!

Bathing a dog frequently will cause dry skin (if you use shampoo)...guess it depends on what you call "frequent".
You're lucky you don't have a big flea problem but down here in the deep south fleas can be a real issue no matter how clean you keep the bedding, carpets, etc. you'll still have fleas.

I use Advantage but others on here use the Advantix. I havent' had to use it very much this year (once in May when I saw a flea on Mayfly) but that was the first time since last November....VERY unusual for us. It doesn't keep the ticks off, though.

I do vacuum my carpet twice a week and we are treating our yard. But I think he gets them from the other yards on our walks. I only bathe him maybe twice a month or when needed. It depends on how many holes he digs in the yard and how much rain we get on how often I bathe him. He likes to roll in mud or atleast it looks like he rolls it in. He likes to do the rattie 500 in mud. Thanks for all the advice so far. Please keep it coming. I just feel so bad for him.

Yah so far I've been pretty lucky. I think it's all the cool weather we've had this "summer" so far up here. If Chloe gets them, I'll certainly treat her with something, but I can't find a one on her. My cat used to get them bad, but we don't have him anymore : ( I only bathe Chloe about twice a month with a very mild dog shampoo- never human shampoo. Doesn't seem to bother her skin at all, but do know it can cause dry skin- otherwise she'd be bathed every couple of days!! lol!

I've used Advantix on Pepper. It works well on mosquitoes and fleas as far as I can tell. I was renting a house that was so infested with fleas, the only option was to rip the carpet out, but the owner only did the bedrooms, not the livingroom. So She was on it her first whole year of life with no problems.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I recieved my K-9 Advantix yesterday at lunch and put it on Toby.
By the time I got home from work and was looking on his belly I found some dead fleas. We spent most of the evening with Toby outside so we could spray and vacuum the inside of the house with something the vet gave us. He is already itching less so that makes me happier.

I use K-9 Advantix... it's the better of the evils I believe... that's what my holistic vet told me, also!

In theory, if you use it for 3 straight months, you should break the flea cycle.  It depends on how severe you're infested.

I'm putting it on my babies this weekend.  I saw a few fleas on them and wanna stop it before it gets too bad!  I was totally infested last year and it was HORRIBLE!!
