My 1 yr old Rattie seems to excessively lick her body and itch, I have not changed her food since getting her at 10 weeks old and she is not bathed excessively? Any suggestions or ideas on why?

What kind of food are you feeding her?  It might be a grain allergy.

Yeah, it could be an allergy, particularly a grain allergy. Ratties seem to be particularly susceptible to them.

Allergies can start at any time.  What kind of food are you feeding her?

Also, it could be a skin allergy - my Mayfly is allergic to flea saliva, some grass pollen, gnat bites, etc.

I had at one point asked my vet about allergies and he told me that generally allergies do not manifest themselves until they are about a year old. It may be food allergies.

Fred had a similar problem recently, and it turned out to be environmental.  The vet could tell by the pattern of itchy places.  Before you go switching food out, a visit to the vet might be best.

After we got our Bailey...she was a couple months old. She started scratching and licking. She came up with two round looking, hairless spots. One on each side of her. I started looking at her food (Science Diet) which is what my vet has always pushed. Too make a long story short, it was her food. I switched her and my little Lucy over to Canidae and their coats are now gorgeous. The spots took about 3-4 months to completely heal but I could tell it was working because she stopped scratching. Good luck to you!

bryson gets itchy... he simply has dry skin. we bath him with oatmeal shampoo 1x every 2 months or so and sometimes put olive oil in his food... it helps!

Purina is not a very high quality food. I'm not sure exactly what type you use (chicken and rice, ect.) but many of their products contain a lot of low end ingredients.

Brewer's Rice, a processed rice product that is missing many of the nutrients contained in whole ground rice and brown rice.

Corn Gluten Meal, which is an inexpensive by-product of human food processing and has very little nutritional value.

Corn in general is a low quality grain and is believed to be the source of many grain allergies.

Corn Bran is an inexpensive source of fiber that serves as a filler ingredient to add bulk to poor quality pet food.

It also has some undetermined animal sources, such as animals fat and animal digest. This could be from ANY animal, including 4D animals (dead, disabled, diseased and dying) roadkill, dead zoo animals, and even euthanized cats and dogs.

Menadione (also called Menadione Dimethyl-Pyrimidinol Bisulfate, Menadione Dimethyl-Pyrimidinol Bisulfite, Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite and Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex) is a synthetic source of vitamin K and has been linked to many health problems.

You might want to try a grainless dog food (like EVO) and see how she does. Here is a web page that lists grainless dog foods and their ingredients....

Also, what is "Ozarka"? I tried looking it up and couldn't find anything about it.

We kept her on the Prurina because the breeder used that and advised we not switch, but I will look into Evo....Ozarka is a bottled water we have delivered so i know it cannot be our well water in the country...thanks!

Welcome to the group! I see you're in South Texas. I'm in Temple just north of Austin. Your pup sure is a cutie pie! Definitely sounds like allergies to me. You've been given some excellent advice already! I just wanted to say welcome to a wonderful forum with great members and lots of good advice.
