Hey all,

I am looking to switch Jazzy off Iams since I now know what poor quality it is.  Has anyone used or heard anything about Blue Buffalo food?  I read the ingredients for the small dog breed and they seemed very good.  Let me know your opinions please.

Blue Buffalo was involved in the pet food recall (the Rice Gluten in their canned foods and Health Bars dog Biscuits) So I would not get any of those products. Their dry food wasn't involved, but it still makes me a bit iffy.
Their ingredients in their dry food looks really good for the most part, though, IMO. I thought of trying out their Blue Wilderness, but I don't trust the manufacturer. I emailed them asking about it, and all I got was an 'I don't know' response.
They also have some ingredients in their food that I've never heard of, and that they don't explain on their website. What on earth is Fructooligosaccharides?! (And how do you pronounce it??)

If you look at doganalysis.com they give Blue Wilderness a top rating and it also explains most of the ingredients. I have started Ty on Blue Wilderness and he has done extremely well!

yikes, I didn't know that bb was in the recall. I have been feeding both my dogs this for a while. They really seem to like it, with no problems. I only have used the dry though....

Well..since i got Yogi, I have had him on Dick Van Pattens's Natural Balance, Nutro, Evo, and now Blue Buff Wilderness Low Carb and he LIKES it..and so does 11 yr old Cat!  I DO like the ingreds and I am a "label-reader"!

I am not discounting the recalls...but most were "canned foods"..anyone here actually use canned???

(I never feed canned anything to my pets...)

I work with someone who was convinced Science Diet was "the best"( by her Vet...duh!)...I convinced her to read the label and consider Blue Buff products or another similar product...surprise! She did just that...now her SD stuff is now for all the stray outside critters...(better than nuttin!)

so, guess I will, (now anyway), stick with "Wilderness"...HAHA! to save my face too!

Only because Yogi AND the Cat like it...and his coat is gorgeous...as is the Cat's.

I fed Fred the Blue Buffalo Small Breed for about 8 months and never had a problem or complaint. I later switched to Canidae just to go another notch up on the quality chain, but not because I was having problems.

Wikipedia is your friend :

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) also sometimes called oligofructose or oligofructan, is a class of oligosaccharides used as an artificial or alternative sweetener. FOS use emerged in the 1980s in response to consumer demand for healthier and calorie-reduced foods. The term oligosaccharide refers to a short chain of sugar molecules (in the case of FOS, fructose molecules). Oligo means few, and saccharide means sugar.

Well then. I personally see no reason to add sugar to dog food. So I personally would pass on this one, but all in all it is not too bad.

Apparently they are non-digestible and provide sweetness with little to no calories.   They are also prebiotics, and since they aren't digested, when they reach the colon they are used by the good or beneficial bacteria (probiotics) found there  for growth and multiplication.

It sounds ok to me but I did read somewhere that it can cause gas.

I've never tried it but this is what Mordanna of the dogfoodproject had to say about Blue:

"To be honest, when it comes to about PetSmart, I find Royal Canin foods more trustworthy and would rather recommend that to people than Blue Buffalo. Or By Nature Organics if they do carry the line (not all locations do).

I can't believe the stupid, incorrect claims Blue made about their food and ingredients. They are trying to copy Wellness "on paper" and add some extra gimmicks, but just don't have the knowledge and experience.

Their "nutritionist" doesn't even know the difference between probiotics and vitamin K and they don't have their own manufacturing plant and do not disclose who makes their foods.

It's all big hype for a rather mediocre, overpriced food."
