| does anyone know how common hip displasia is in rat terriers? i know it affects bigger dogs most of the time. my baby is starting to worry me a bit. she doesnt seem to want to run full speed anymore., has been sitting croooked and randomly will lift one leg like something is wrong, but then be fine, almost like the joint might be popping out on her. i dont know her history, because she was a gift( i know, kind of strange) im worried she possibly came from a petshop as well, which means she probably didnt come from a responsible breeder. any info on this condition in ratties would be awesome. im going to get her checked out soon, but
wanted to see what you folks had to say on the subject. |

| Ratties are more apt to get slipping patellas than hip displasia. Basicly slipping knee caps, that won't stay in position. Have your vet check her for patellas. It is a common problem in small breeds more so than the hip displasia. Ratties are also know to have it. If you want to know about common diseases, then check out the nrta.com site. they have alarge amount of information on rat terriers, genetic and diseases. |

| my guy is 5 and the vet just let me know that he has Patellar Luxation which is knee pops out and he has to try to adjust his leg so it pops back in. He has slowly been doing it more and if it keeps getting worse than hell need surgery. Little dogs tend to get this, I dont know if thats what your dog might be dealing with, but its a good idea to get the vet to test for it, the vet just feels the legs and sees manually if it pops.Hope you find out soon, good luck! |

| Lucy also has luxating patellas. I would bring it up to your vets attention next time you are in. My vet said that it can cause arthritis too. And yes ratties are the best. |

| Horses get something similar to this -- upper fixation of the patella and exercise sometimes helps it. Has anyone tried that? |

| Exercise to help fix patella problems? If thats what you are asking, the vet told me to exercise Lucy to prevent problems. She said just to keep her active. |
