I have been feeding my girls Merrick dry kibble with a little canned mixed in for the last several weeks. They seem to like it. Clean bowls all around. As for feeding 'wet' food, I like to do this for my dogs. (they get about a table spoon mixed in.) I know they don't 'need' it. Their teeth are fine. Immi had a cleaning in November, and the vet was impressed with how good her teeth looked for her age. ( she will be 11 in June ) Savanna is due for a cleaning this summer, just because it is part of her plan. I give them both denta bones and stix, plus hard bisquits for snacks. No poop issues either btw! Oh, prior to the switch to Merrick, they had always been on nutro lamb and rice. |

| Geeze Im gonna have to get two different kinds of food! Charlie needs to gain weight and Kayla could stand to loose some. But I know if I tried to do that they would end up eating the other ones food! |

| I stopped and picked up a small bag of the canidae. I started last night mixing it about half and half with Izzy's purina puppy chow. She loves it. I think she even liked it better then the purina. So after this bag if her skin and coat looks better we may switch over. It is more expensive but worth it. The 5 lbs bag was 6.99 at this store i got it from. So not tooo bad but more then the purina. Which you have to expect the better stuff to be more expensive! |

| Oh, it's worth it! I'm going to get some canidae at the end of the month and mix it in with their NB. There is so much meat in it and no fillers! The purina and others like it are cheaper because they add so much filler - it's less for them to make it. |

| You will also end up feeding less than you would with Purina or other big name brands because there is no filler. If there is filler you have to feed more to get the proper amount of real nutritious things for your dog into your dog. So in the end I believe its about equal because the bag will last longer than the same size bag of Purina. |

Jack was definately eating more of the pro plan then the Canidae. gas went away and breath got better too! Definately worth it not to feed the "big" name foods like Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Pedigree, etc. They are all full of fillers and are not very good for your dog. For the size of these little guys, the don't eat that much of these "good" foods because it is very nutritious. If you think about it, it takes Jack about 2-3 weeks to go through a 5lb bag of Canidae at 7.50 a bag. THAT'S ONLY .35 TO .53 CENTS A DAY!!!!! |

I feed my babies Nutro Lamb & Rice, but my Vet. gave us Purina Pro Plan last month and said it works just as well as any brand.
NOT TRUE!! It is full of fillers. Jack was on this and he is so much healthier looking (and smelling ) since we switched to a high-quality food(which pro plan is not). I learned a lot here from everone on food and it has really opened my eyes up!

I picked up a bag of Merrick Puppy Plate for Ginger, we'll see how she likes it. Some of their canned food has actual chicken wings and thighs in it. Their food is very interesting, here is Merrick's website.
I'm not going to admit what we were feeding her, it was food that I though was good, but turned out to be full of fillers, I picked it because it was high protein and labled as a high quaility food. |

Hmm my vet recommended Science Diet and Nibbler seems to be doing well on it. His coat looks good and he's growing fast. For a while he was having gas, but i found out he was getting human food from my Uncle (mostly fried something) when he would watch him, and since we stopped that, its been better. And he still has puppy breath lol. |

Just an FYI, corn is a filler, not 100 percent bad but they could do without it. At the very least you don't want it as the first ingredient. Ski does a very good job at explaining this. Here is the list of ingredients from Science Diet (and vets get paid to endorse food, doesn't mean it is very good) Note the first ingredient ( also the chicken by-product meal )
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Brewers Rice, Fish Oil, Flaxseed, Soybean Oil, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

My mom feeds her dog Merrick dry mixed with their canned food. Noonan's fur has gotten much softer and she absolutely loves her food. Lucy gets to eat this type whenever they eat together. Well, now for the next 8 weeks she will be eating it for two days each week. I checked out that website and was a little surprised to see that Nurto natural choice dog foods, which a large portion of us feed our dogs only received 2 stars. |

| Oh by the way, there is a powder that you put on wet dog food that is supposed to help with cleaning their teeth. It's called Wysong DentaTreat. My mom gave me a container of it and you keep it in the fridge and sprinkle some on their food. |

I might get booed here but, I feed my twins Iams for small breed dogs. Once a day they each have a half of a pouch of Pedigree food mixed with it or only tiny amounts of meat or veggie (with rice if we are having it) leftovers. |

Nobody means to "boo" anyone here for what they feed. We all love our pups, and everyone is feeding what they believe to be a "good" food. Sometimes vets recommend Science Diet (and who doesn't want to trust their own vet?) even though Science Diet is a very poor quality food. Hill's (the maker of Science Diet) offers funding and incentives to veterinary colleges, just one of many examples of this can be seen at this link from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at: http://education.vetmed.vt.edu/Schedules/yeeowza/hills.asp
Advertising companies also do a wonderful job at making other poor quality foods sound like exactly what our dogs need. All we can do is educate ourselves on what really make up a quality food, and then choose what is right for our own dogs.
A good website for learning more on how to choose quality foods is The Dog Food Project: http://dogfoodproject.com
