Sorry if this has been talked about to death, but just wanted to see what you guys are feeding now with all the recalls?  Has anyone switched to a homemade diet?

He started on Nutro Max Senior, after Nutro recalls I switched him to Innova Senior, I was talked into trying raw and bought a bag of Nature's Variety premade raw which is sitting in the freezer unopened, and am just not sure what to do.  I also purchased a bag of California Natural Lamb & Rice and haven't tried that yet, either.  I am totally confused now as to what is the best thing to be feeding and wanted to see what you think.

I still feed the Nutro Lamb and Rice dry formula which is not subject to the recalls.

I and a few others are feeding Canidae. They seem to like it.

I switch between Nutro Lamb & Rice small bites (not part of recall) and Natural Balance Premium weight control and Natural Balance Duck/Potato. Thinking of adding Canidae to the mix.

Lucy eats a few different things. Her free feeding bowl is Nurto lamb and rice. She gets a special dinner every other night or so of Homestyle Select. Then when we are at my parents, or now when my mom stays with me she eats Merick (usually their wet mixed with either nutro or merick dry). None of those have had a recall.

I was feeding Jerry Nutro Max. After we adopted Darby, I talked to our obedience trainer/pet supply guy and he recommended Canidae. I am gradually switching them over. Darby did not care for Nutro, but she loves the Canidae! Jerry will eat anything.

I have been feeding Izzy puppy Chow for puppies.  This is what the foster parents were feeding and she seems to be doing well with it.  No bowl issues or problems.

Mic eats Nutro Max, small bites (the pink bag) It's time to buy food again and I think I will stick with that. Since their dry food isn't on the list I feel ok about it... I still watch him like a hawk though! I would switch to Candae, but I just hate to switch his food again, he gets so sick when we do...

I wanted to get Canidae but no one here sells it and it cost just as much as the food cost to ship it so I found the Natural Balance Ultra that both of mine love. We tried mixing it in with thier old food but they just picked out the new stuff and wouldnt touch the old.

Apollo was on Nutro but to make a long story short I won't buy any brand that still does business with Menu, regardless if I'm feeding the 'actual' recalled food or not.  I now feed both Apollo and Emma Canidae.  They both love it.  Canidae doesn't use any type of wheat or corn products.

Homemade or raw is probably the healthiest, providing you inform yourself enough on nutrition to feed a complete diet. As far as the dry food is concerned, Innova or California Natural are at or near the top in quality, you won't go wrong with either one.

It's ok to combine them too. I think Nora feeds Nature's Variety premade raw one day and dry food the next. I feed mostly dry food and am currently rotating between grain-free foods due to a weight problem. I also give my two boys omega 3 fish oil supplements because even if the food has it, it doesn't store well and needs to be added every day.

I thought I found a bargain when I found Canidae online for 20 something dollars...turned out it would be $50 something with shipping!

Yep that is how it was for me. I love my dogs but that is way too much money when I can get a big bag of Natural Balance Ultra for $20 and not have to wait for it to be shipped!!!

I feed Max and Sampson Pedigree Puppy...Vet prescribed it for Sampson since he was losing so much weight. Max also loves it and we've not had any problems, so we'll probably keep him on it unless he starts getting too fat!!

Gracie was on a mix of Iams, Pedigree, and Dad's puppychows at the animal shelter.  I immediately started to switch her over to Chicken Soup for the Puppy lovers soul.  They actually sell it in my local Grocery Store and for a 6lb bag it was $7.99.  The other brands such as Purina might be cheaper but I have already noticed that she went from having dry itchy dandruffy skin and lackluster coat to having much less dandruff and a nice shiny coat.  Also, Gracie loves it and she is no longer having bad gas and stinky runny poop.

I may give the Chicken Soup brand a try - looks like decent ingredients...Nutro was purchased by Mars (I think) and I'm a bit concerned about quality control changing for the worse.

I feed Canidae most of the time, but alternate with other high quality brands every few bags.

A couple of good websites for information when deciding on a food to try:

Same thing with Skipper - when he came home with us from the shelter he had dandruff, dull coat, smelled bad, was thin and had horrible breath.  After just a week of quality food vs corn filler food he had no dandruff, smelled good, fur felt soft, etc.

You know after reading all your inputs i was thinking and realizing that Izzy is on the Purina puppy chow and she does have some dandruff and itching.  I just thought it was normal for this type of dog.  We will have to try some different foods after this bag is gone and she if any of that changes.  THANKS!

I have found that most vets actually don't know much about food and quality of food.  In fact many vets sell and recommend brands such as Science Diet, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, etc.  So what your vet recommends is not always the best choice lol not surprising seeing as its the same with vets and horses, my vet told me to feed my 3 sweet feed and when I said I was not going to grain them in the summer he thought I was crazy  lol

I feed Macie Purina for indoor dogs, she loves it! She sometimes has dandruff but she gets a bath about every 3-5 days because she likes to get all muddy outside!

No offense to anyone's vet - really! But I think vet's often recommend certain pet foods because of "incentives" from company's to do so, and not because they are better or even as good as other brands. JMO!

I'm curious what he meant by "will work as well as" - I mean any brand of dog food technically will keep a dog from starving, but that certainly doesn't mean that quality isn't or shouldn't be a factor.

Ratties are know for their thinner coats, and are often predisposed to skin itchiness/dryness and sometimes allergies to the cheap "fillers" like corn and by-products used in certain dog foods.

I agree with you Tracey. To be honest, I've never even asked my vet what for is best! I mean granted vets know alot about things but IMO not much about foods. Besides we are with our dogs a heck of alot more then the vet and we see how they react ( both enternally and externally ) to the food. But this is JMO!!!

Okay i need help?  What do you look for to be in the food?  What makes one food better then another?  I have never owned a dog so i guess i don't know what to look for.  But Izzy is having some minor skin issues with the dryness and itching.  Help please?
