VIno and Mocha went for comprehensive exams today and had their anal glands expressed. Does anyone know about how long it takes them to refill? Or how often they should be expressed? |

well we have never had baileys expressed but one time he had this really nasty smell coming from his behind so I called me vet and made an appointment for the following day. Well he must have expressed them himself b/c that next morning he didnt smell. So I called the vet and she said that most dogs will express them by themselves. She recommended that we DO NOT give him soft treats to give him hard treats so that when he has to potty that it would help along with the process....kinda gross but makes since. She also so that that is why you see outside dogs eat bark/small tree limbs so that when they poop it pushes it on out. Since we switched him over to mainly hard treats we havent had a problem. Good luck |

I think it really depends on the dogs...Lucy and Molly both had their expressed in Feb, and have just started licking that area (a sign that it needs to be done again). At least I can just make a tech appointment (so much cheaper), and get their nails clipped at the same time. |

Savanna doesn't get soft treats, and she mostly eats dry, just a little wet and green beans. This dog always has to have her glands expressed. I wish I had an answer. |

| A bit more bulk in the diet can help them self express (a good firm stool). Every few years (3-4) Roxy we will express them for Roxy if she's irritated but we've never had to do anyone else's. |

As stated below.. butt scooting is a good indicator. I don't express unless the glands feel like they have something in them. Don't attempt to express until you are shown how though - you can hurt them unnessesarily. A groomer would happily show you - the vet will want you to pay him to do it. LOL I'm not knockin' vets just know from experience.
A friendly tip: put a paper towel over the butt before expressing cause if it squirts out and gets you and it will.. its very difficult to get the smell out and it is noxious! |

| LOL Ashley - sure for a small fee (grin). The surprising thing is that most dogs don't mind having it done - vet say she thinks it must feel good to them. |

We have had Jazzy for 4 months and have had it done two times already. She is just more prone to it the vet said. My vet showed me how to express them, and said do it once a month when I am giving her a bath if she appears to need it. Since it squirts she will be in the tub. Lol He told me to apply pressure on both sides consistently while gently pulling the anus out a little. I have not tried it yet, just offering my experience. Good Luck! |

It really varies dog to dog. Some need it once a month, some once in their life. I don't know any dog that enjoys having it done, it can be painful and most dogs really don't like it at all. I wouldn't have a groomer do it, because they won't be able to do anything for you if the anal sacs are infected. Scooting is your best indicator that it needs to be done. Other times you can smell it. You'd think it would smell like dog poo but nope! More like chemicals, I think. |
