About a week go I noticed some round grey spots on Miley, our 8 month old.  They are on her belly and visable in the area where she was shaved when spade about two months ago.  They look like 'mold' and are 1/8 to 1/2 inch in size.  They are smooth to the touch and there are about 25 of them.  Today I noticed 4 have light-red circles around them.  They don't seem to bother her as she doesn't lick or chew at them.  Her food had not changed, but given the chance she will eat or drink anything!  With the warmer weather she is spending more time outside.  Her vet is closed for the holiday weekend so just wondered if I have a major problem to find another vet.  Thanks for any help.

That is common. It is called ticking. Almost every rattie has it. It is ok, nothing to worry about.

hmm at first i thought you were just referring to what we call "ticking"...my Trixi has TONS of it...its black spots that are similar to freckles....mostly on the tummy and chest. my baby...Toa started getting them qround 5-6 months also but doesnt have as many as Trixi...
then when you said something about the red circles, it threw me off a bit...not sure...hope someone else has better advice than me...welcome and good luck!

Maybe there are red circles around them, because they just appeared. Have you been rubbing on them?

if I had a nickel for evey time someone asked about this....

ticking is basically freckles and will get darker with more sun exposure...totally normal rattie trait. one of my ratties has only a few very light spots, while the other one has tons...the spots pretty much disappeared during the winter and came back as she was able to spend more time outside.

Thanks to all for your quick responses and setting our minds at ease!  This is my first time on this site and the one common thread here is how much we love and are attached to our rat terriers!  We got Miley as a pet for my daughter but after the newness wore off she became my pal and Miley and I are now inseparable. (Picture a 6'2" guy walking a rat terrier around the neighborhood).  She's a jumper, a chewer and a haunt sometimes but what a great pet and a wonderful addition to the family!

Welcome and hope to see pics soon of Miley. Is she named after Miley Cyrus? My Bailey has ticking that gets darker in the summer, I hope that is all that Miley has, not sure about the red circles.
