Paisley weighs 13.5 lbs, I think she should weigh about 15-16. She's really lean - I like lean, my lab is lean but she is a little too lean (a little bony in the behind and ribby). I've had her for 3.5 weeks and I have not been all that successful in getting her to gain weight. I am feeding her 3/4 cup Wellness Core kibble in the AM and just shy of 1/4 lb raw at night. She is getting 1/4 cup more than the recommended serving for her size of the kibble and more than the recommended amount of raw. Should I give her a 3rd feeding per day? I don't want to overfeed her. How can I pack in more calories? They get 1.5-2 hours of exercise per day. She eats heartily... |

NW Naturals - local company that distributes through the specialty local pet stores. I buy the 1 lb bars. So far a variety of meat types - but next purchase will be probably Turkey or Chicken in bulk.

Normally just having a couple feedings of kibble a day will do the trick. No need to add in a ton of extra calories. You want her to put on the weight slowly. If you think she can handle an additional 1/4 cup feeding that would be okay and continue the exercise since that will add muscle. Since ratties are normally lean you just want to go just beyond seeing her ribs. So if you can in fact see her ribs she could use a pound or two. She looks like a beautiful rattie girl! |

| If you are doing prefab raw I would do what Paula says and up the kibble meal if she can eat a bit more or add a mid day snack if possible. |

I can so relate to this because I'm trying to put weight on my foster rat, Gavin. He was quite emaciated when he came from the shelter, then he went thru no eating for 3 days from the bacterial enteritis. He's been with me 3 weeks today and has gained weight, he is no longer so ribby. But he needs more weight over his ribs and he REALLY needs to gain weight on his butt! Now, I know how to know get a horse's butt larger but not sure about a dog (since I can't ride him! LOL). He's getting NB duck/potato 1 cup in the AM and 1 in the Pm. And I've been walking him between 1/2 mile and a mile each day....I'm thinking maybe that's too much exercise? He's burning more calories than he can store? |

| MB, when I need to put weight on a dog I feed them more if they will eat it. Just up him 1/4 cup each meal for a few weeks (1/2 cup a day). Then as he gets closer to what you want cut 1/4cup off and see if he maintains or starts to loose again. |

| Starting today we're giving him 1/4-1/3 as a third meal. He will only eat a limited amount at a time (maybe his stomach is small from almost starving?) so we're trying more frequent meals. |

That's it - she's ribby and skinny in the behind... I am working off the recommended amount for her size (and adding to that) but I am thinking she needs more than that as a basis (because of the activity level) and then add 1/4 cup to that. I am giving a few more treats today also. She's all muscle. She looks like a track greyhound - she's definitely healthy, I just like that lean layer over the ribs, like my lab has. You can't see his ribs but you can feel them and he has a nice waist. That is the look I am going for. I would not back off on the exercise. It is so good for them to walk. I walk 2-4 miles (1 hr) plus one other activity (dog park, bike ride, fetch). |
