Ok, obviously no food can be trusted. Nature's Balance has a warning on their website that their venison food is making dogs sick. It has no wheat gluten in it!
This is the food I really wanted to try, so I found some Saturday and have given them a little Saturday and Sunday evenings....now I gave them the Duck and Potato NOT the Venison which they are now issuing a warning about but still..
Now I'm scared....this food is all natural, not made by Menu, made in their own plants, rather costly but still - it's making dogs sick!!!

| Ok, why is this happening all at once like this??? I mean, I understood the MenuFoods thing (tainted wheat gluten, Menu didn't recall quick enough, etc.) but now this high-quality food is making pets sick. I'm going to go home and pick out all the Duck food from their Nutro...but heck will Nutro be next??? |

| At least this company is warning people even though the don't know if it is their food. That is respectable. As for the food, this is getting scary, I agree. What IS going on?? |

This is getting worse almost daily... I checked the Nutro website again and they have issued a recall of ALL it's wet food products which contain wheat gluten regardless of the production date despite Menu's insistence that only certain dates of production were suspect to contamination.
Here is the latest press release:
Nutro Products Orders Removal of All Wet Pet Food Products Made by Menu Foods with Wheat Gluten Nutro Dry Foods, Biscuits and Treats are NOT manufactured by Menu Foods and are NOT Affected by Recall
City of Industry, Calif. (April 10, 2007)– Earlier today, Menu Foods expanded its recall of wet pet food products to include additional wet pet foods suspected of containing melamine from Chinese supplied wheat gluten.
Given this new information and the confusion in the marketplace, Nutro has ordered ALL Nutro wet pouched and canned foods made with wheat gluten be removed from store shelves regardless of the date of production and asks pet owners to stop feeding those products to their pets. Nutro is taking this action even though the Menu Foods press release indicates that only certain dates of production at its plant were affected.
“Pet owners are fed up with confusing information regarding the Menu Foods recall,” said Dave Kravis, President and CEO of Nutro Products. "I had previously ordered a broader recall of affected products than what Menu Foods had suggested. Given this new information from Menu Foods, I have ordered all wet pet food products containing wheat gluten to be removed from store shelves. Our dry pet food is not made by Menu and remains unaffected by the recall."
As a result of this new information, Nutro has suspended all shipments to retail stores of Nutro's wet canned and pouch products that contain wheat gluten until Nutro is able to confirm their safety.
Nutro Products is asking all customers who have the following Nutro wet pet food products (which are made by Menu Foods and contain wheat gluten) regardless of “best by date,” to immediately stop feeding the products to their pets. All Cat Pouch Food Products Listed Cat 3.0 oz can products All Dog Pouch Food Products Listed Dog 12.5 oz Canned Products
View a detailed list of all recalled products.
Nutro's products are 100% guaranteed and all returned product will be refunded. Customers should return products affected by the recall to the retail location where they purchased the product.
The Menu Foods wet pet food recall does not include Nutro's dry pet food. Nutro's dry pet foods are not produced by Menu Foods and do not contain wheat gluten. Nutro's dry pet foods, biscuits and treats - over 90% of the pet food Nutro sells - are not involved in the recall and remain safe for pets to eat. Menu manufactures only wet, canned and pouch products for Nutro.
Nutro customers may check Nutro's website ( www.nutroproducts.com ) or contact Nutro's Consumer Hotline (800) 833-5330 for further information about its products. Nutro's website will be updated as more information becomes available.
Daisy and Anna have been on Nutro Lamb and Rice during this entire time and are well, so for now that's what I'm sticking with. |

| I am just sticking with what I have used the last 2 yrs with no problems. Nutro Ultra dry kibble for small breeds. No reason in switching with all the craziness right now, plus I am really happy with it. |

I had seen this. I stopped buying nutro wet products after the recall. I switched to Wellness dry and canned last week aqfter much research. (or so I thought) I had e-mailed them (Wellness) and asked specifically if any of their products were made by menu foods. They respponded by saying their food was not involved in any recall, and they used all of their own products in the manufacture of their foods. Today I found out that the wet food is, in fact, manufactured at menu foods! I do not like being misled. |

| Well, I like the Nutro Lamb and Rice, was just going to supplement that with the Natural Balance (can't afford to totally feed that because even though it's a good food it is expensive). Mine aren't sick at all so I think the Duck is ok....Skipper has had some gas and threw up once but I attributed that to new food and the eggs, veggies he's getting that he's not used to. |

OH, Deb, that is awful that they pretty much just out right lied to you GRRRRR!!!
Nutro seems to be growing disgusted with Menu Foods and I am hopeful that they will discontinue doing business with them...though I have no evidence that will happen, but I hope it does.
Again, for now Nutro's dry kibble seems to be really safe, so I'm not even going to consider switching right now. |

| I think at this point I will stick with NO wet food at all, Canidae dry and my own supplements. Although at this point it seems like there are recalls everywhere! Who's to say what it will be next? Whether it's the food I feed my dog or the mouthwash for my kids, what is safe? Ugghh...I can't take it, it's too nerve-racking. Back to hunting and foraging....................... |

| I just bought another bag of the Nutro Lamb & Rice small bits. Bob hasn't had any problems on it and it wasn't in the recall, so I'm sticking with it. |

| Maybe the Natural Balance is just a fluke and they just got a bad batch of venison. They seem to be a very good company. It's just very weird that it would happen right now! |

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a high quality canned food that wasn't made by Menu. Granted, their evasive answers make you suspicious, and about all companies answer the same way, but most use Menu for the simple reason is that they are the best. Wellness said they use their own ingredients and I believe that, and would feel comfortable feeding their food. I just wouldn't trust Menu to buy the ingredients, which is what the recalled food companies did.
Having said that, I still feel the most safe feeding tripe. |
