Subject: thunder & lighting

Does anyone have a problem with their rat terrier becoming spastic when there is thunder and lighting going on.  Taddi takes on a whole new personality, jumping on us and panting and this goes on until the storm passes...........What do you do for this?  Any help.

My 12yr old poodle has just started showing this same behavior. We put him in his crate and cover him up....USUALLY that is enough to settle him down.

Boozer has a panic attack. The vet gave us something for him when we know bad weather is coming.

you shouldn't try to comfort him while it's going on...it only re-enforces the behavior. I try to act like it doesn't bother me, and keep doing whatever I'm doing. once they see that you're not upset, they do start to calm down a bit. do you crate-train him? maybe put him in there until the storm passes?

this is not the same thing, but the other night there was a big thing going on at the high school, and they had fireworks....the dogs freaked, barking and running through the house trying to get our attention. i ignored them (pulled out a book and read) until they calmed down and relaxed...THEN I praised them.
