Linda, was there something else you meant by me being young? i just didnt catch it, or were you just meaning i am going to be a young dog owner bcuz your daughter was 26 when she got the pup?

does your daughter have 2 ratties and you have 2? i see four in you picture, 3 of them look like theyre from the same litter?

Oh my gosh! This is so weird, I also came on here months and months ago researching rat terriers. I am 20 and go to UW in seattle Looks like we all have a lot in common. After researching since SEPTEMBER, I FINALLY get to take my puppy home in 3 WEEKS! We should all meet up with our pups!

I don't know what size you guys are looking for, but you should look into silver stars rat terriers. It's located near Portland, the breeder specializes in toy sizes, but I researched A LOT and she is a great breeder who cares about her dogs a lot! She has a litter being born this week

wow that is so crazy! ive only been on here for like 3 weeks but ive been researching since january when i decided i wanted a puppy. this is just too funny, and we are all around the same age and live around the same area.

thats cool you go to UW, if i had the grades MAYBE i would have gone there but i was so sure i wanted to go to WSU but before i got in i decided i wanted to go to CWU. i got into both but i decided i didnt wanna be that far away, and out in the middle of no where lol.

haha yeah we should totally meet up and have a play date! lol look at us, we dont even have our ratties yet lol, i am so excited though~

i was actually thinking about getting a toy, but for some reason i couldnt find many breeders in washington, now i know a few. i was going to get an outta state toy, but then i decided i wanted a standard and the ni decided i wanted to meet the breeder rather than have the puppy fly out to me

Thanks! you guys are so friendly!

i was thinking of going with a breeder (http://imageevent.com/drratterriers) these guys are only like an hour or so away and seem to know what they're doing... what do you think? the pups come with their first shots/worming... i was considering a rescue group but mostly i since it's my first rattie, i kinda want to know what i'm getting into (as far as genetics and personality) and i don't think i'm really prepared yet to handle a dog that has baggage from a past owner... sorry but maybe later... when i have more experience... but who knows! it's still quite a ways away! lol (i'm WAY too excited for this!)

haha there's so many replies already i don't know what to say next!!!

i'm also actually looking forward to the training! i know they can be stubborn, but i'm pretty good with puppies (all of our dogs had the basics) and my boyfriend did dog 4-H when he was younger, so he worked with his a lot
but don't worry about the responsibility aspect of it (though i appreciate the concern-i love that you guys care!) i just don't believe in selling a pet when it's come into my home... it's kinda like family <3 and who sells them (no matter how irritating ;P )

Rescue has come a very long way. Ratbones has puppies who really are not even old enough to have "baggage" .  This statement is a little outdated, and if you look at rescue these days these dogs are in foster homes living in family style situations. You can find baggage with any dog breeder or rescue. If you are concerned about all the issues you are stating then ratbones may be a better way to do due to the fact that they vet their dogs and know of any and all issues.  You never know "what you are getting into" with any dog breeder or rescue. there is a lot of infomration on this site and I hope you would give it a second glance and educate yourself on rescue before ruling it out. Rescue IS the best option, I know. My family dog was a rescue, but I really wanted to find a breeder, see the parents, watch the puppies grow up, and everything that goes along with that. I've never had a puppy before and I really just wanted to do the whole breeder process at least once in my life. I feel like if you aren't getting your dog from a pet store, or even a backyard breeder, but from a breeder who understands the standards of the breeds and is breeding for temperament and quality, then it is a fine choice to go with a breeder. And even though how you raise the puppy may determine most of it's personality, you don't know all the genetic problems that the puppy may have been born with when going the rescue option. I DO plan on rescuing in the future, as I have done in the past, but this is really the way I want to go for my first puppy.

wow, i coulnt have expressed my opinion in a better way! well said. yeah this is my first puppy and i want the same exact thing. but like i have stated in past forums and in this one, i DO plan on rescuing and i always recommend it, but for right now going through a breeder is what i want. i am actually gong to meet her in a few weeks and see her dogs and a puppie from her last litter. she is a very nice lady and i cant wait. i still give much credit to everyone on here who have rescued ratties and other animals

When you rescue an adult dog from a group like RBR - you already know it's personality / temperament and likely genetic problems. Most dogs with "baggage" can be easier to retrain than starting from a puppy. Whether you want a puppy or a rescued dog, your success is going to hinge on providing consistent balanced leadership for your dog, challenging them mentally and physically, providing discipline and affection and not nurturing wrong behaviors. You can buy the best puppy from the best breeder but if you don't know how to lead a dog - you can end up in months with what you think you are trying to avoid. I am not advocating either option - I am just pointing out that getting a puppy from a breeder is not going to guarantee you a happy balanced "baggage-free" dog. You are your dog's best chance for that - no matter where they come from.

totally agree. especially if you rescue a dog who DID come from a bad home, that just makes them love you more and respect you morewhen you treat them right. they know they had a bad life and you gave them a good life, which just makes love you more. thats what i love when rescuing an animal.

i love the fact that you pet also becomes your best friend in fact the dog whisperer just came on and i am watching it now lol i am going to borrow my grandparents dvd of him that my parents game them and wath them before i get a new pup. my moms friend has 3 labs, one rescued from a VERY abusive home, and ALL three of them are the sweetest ever, and she lives by the dog whisperer and all 3 of her dogs are the most well traind animals ive seen. ahe is such a great person and dog trainer i know hat if i am having trouble with something, i could go to her for advice

but yeah back to what you were saying bluedog, no matter where you get the dog the way you raise them and treat them is what makes a good dog, the fact that it is pure bred doesnt change the dogs personality, it doesnt mean they are going to be the most well behaved angel ever, if you do it wrong you could end up woth a monster breeder, adopted or whatever it doesnt make that difference. very understandable and agreed. i am still personally geting my first pup from this lady who breeds them, but thats just my personal choice. but i am definently going to be getting more animals in my future and i plan to adopt. i got on pet finder all the time just to look, and i just wanna take everyone home with me! i give many thanx to the people on here and in the world that do treat animals right and adopt!

haha wow! there's so many more replies since i was last here  SO MUCH TO WRITE! where to start...

it's kinda weird that erin, kristin and i are all close to the same age and in the same area and stuff  what month is your birthday in erin? we're probably closer to the same age than we realize if you're turning twenty after you get your puppy too! (mines in december)

i'd be totally psyched for a playdate if you gals wanted to later.  i live in the u-district area also, so that's pretty convenient lol

size doesn't really matter that much, but i'd like a standard. and i actually checked out silver stars too, but they're quite a bit further than d&r (in spanaway)  but i think yours is just TOO CUTE

haha yeah
i think a playdate would be fun. i know there's a couple dog parks with off-leash areas nearby me (http://www.seattle.gov/parks/offleash.asp) and i'd be willing to meet in the middle but the rules say the pups have to be 4 months old, which is totally understandable

Yeah I have been reading up on a lot of dog behavior books and taking a lot of animal behavior classes so hopefully I will be prepared! I am also working at a dog day care this summer, so I will get to take advantage of the training and socialization that it will provide! I just want to be the best mommy possible We could always meet up at one of our houses or something when they're littler so they can play together as little pups, after they get their shots! I live in the U-District too, how crazy!

Ashley, haha you are right there about the obsession thing lol

Kristen, wow you are doing a really great job preparing yourself lol good! yeah this summer i just wanna get a part time job at petco, i think it would be so fun! plus i have a part time job waitressing when school gets out, but i wanna make a lot this summer hehe i cant remember if you mentioned it or not, but the puppies you are choosing from, are they makes or females?

i waw totally second guessing myself last night thinking imaybe i wanted a male instead of a female...idk i think i will stick with the female but i am just so indecisive lol i want a lil girl lol.

we should totally get them together when theyre young, it be great socialization and they woud have some friends if ashley gets her pup in fall, we should meet up around december, pleanty of time for vaccinations and i get a month off school lol, but anyway thats way far away, no need to be thinkng about that now lol i am just really excited as well lol

haha yeah I have been a little obsessed.. I guess it's good to be obsessed though, I mean they're going to be so much work, we better be obsessed! haha I am getting a female, I've always had male dogs and I really just wanted to have a little girl for once. I hear the biggest downside to having a female is the heat, but I'm getting her spayed. Plus my family dog is a boy and he tries to mount every person that comes through our door! Haha although I hear females also do that.. we'll see! If you guys are having puppy cravings, let me know in a couple weeks and you can come meet Olive I still can't believe I'm going to be a mommy so soon! Ashley, are you getting a boy or a girl?
