A 26 pound bag of dry and 12 cans of 95% Salmon was about $98.00!   But this dog food is supposed to be grain free - high protein and low carbs. My Snoopy has crystals in his urine and my holistic vet said this is often caused by high carb kibble, so she suggested more protein.  I wanted to change his diet because if I don't address it, the next step is kidney stones and I sure don't want him to have to deal with that!!

So I figured I may as well feed ALL the babies this stuff instead of just Snoopy... I hope it works. It's actually only about $20.00 more for both than Eagle Pack Holistic that I was buying, so it's worth it!

Has anybody else tried this food yet?

I haven't tried the Wellness Core foods. I started feeding Rowdy Orijen 6 Fresh Fish a couple months ago, however, and absolutely love it. He loves the food and his coat is soft and shiny. I don't know exactly how the two compare, but seems like both Wellness and Orijen are basing the ingredients on fish and keeping the carbs to a minimum. Orijen just seems to use more salmon and Wellness lists whitefish first.

The only thing I notice is that his food smells a little fishy. And James says it gives Rowdy fish-breath. Whether it does or not, he seems to love it!

I tried the regular Core formula, not the fish. The boys started dropping hair like crazy within a day for some reason. I ended up feeding it for like a week and they got worse so I threw the rest out. I am not sure what it was but neither of my boys did good on it at all. I know Ski had great results with it. I thought it may be the high protein but now I am feeding Taste of the Wild now and they are doing amazing on it, also about the same as far as protein content and no grains. I really think these little guys do great on a grain-free diet. Remember that you will most likely feed less though as the calorie/fat content is higher.

I just started feeding Wellness Core Original Formula yesterday, so I can't give an educated review yet. I am trying to switch Moose from Beneful (bad dandruff on a black lab - it is what he was on when we got him a few months ago). Paisley was on Solid Gold small dog maintenance (which she now leaves behind in the bowl - good food but very fishy smell). We first tried Innova EVO and it was too rich, they both had diarrhea after 10 days of gradual switch (not uncontrollable but really runny). I think the food was too rich for them. They have had 2 feedings of Wellness and already moose's stools are firm (still getting some beneful), paisley's are improved. I think it is interesting that there is definitely not a one size fits all. Moose's coat improved dramatically on the EVO. Core is supposed to be similar but 8% less protein and fat content to it is a little easier for sensitive dogs to process.

I am fortunate to have a high end pet store nearby with very knowledgable personnel. I am working with one guy to find the right food for my dogs. They will take open bags of food back. My goal is to get them both on half of a high quality kibble and half raw.

I've noticed with both the EVO and the Wellness, you literally feed half so the cost is not that much more (just up front). Paisley when she hits her weight (she's trying to gain 2) will only get a 1/2 rounded cup. Moose will get 2 cups where he gets 4 of beneful.
