Valerie try this. Go buy one of the mini muzzles that just slip over the end of the snout and buckle at the back. A little tricky getting the belt just the right length for your dog the first time, but worth the trouble, believe me. I know, ya hate to use a muzzle, but I had the same situation and I had to find a way to administer ear drops. it really worked for me. Button was REAL bad as a puppy about not letting us put ear meds in her ears when she had a bad ear infection at about age 1. The only way she would tolerate it was to use the muzzle (my vet calls it a "part hat" LOL). Once Button realized the futility of fighting the ear drops she settled down and tolerated it without squirming or snarling at us. In fact, Lance had to leave town the very next day and I had to start doing the drops by myself. I went and bought the muzzle in sheer desperation. After a day or two using the muzzle, she realized the drops didn't hurt a bit and got to the point of letting me put the drops in without the muzzle, ALONE even! Always be sure to praise profusely with "Good Medicine" (or whatever) after medicating and always give a VERY special, rare treat so they begin to almost look forward to medicating. This really helps with what can be a very unpleasant task at times. I did all the puppy conditioning but it just didn't work with Button. I just HAD to get creative. LOL |
