ok so i got a lot of advice from everyone on this site to add fish oil and vitamin e to my dogs food, so i plan on doing that, but someone recommended either grizzly fish oil or seapet fish oil.

now the grizzly had omega 3 and 6 but you have to get the vitamin e separetly, but with the seapet it has the vitamin e in it , which is easier but it doesnt have any extra omega 6 added...

my question is, is it better to give your dogs omega 3 and 6 and vitamin e or not to give the omega 6? becaue i was told to give omega 6 as well but the seapet doesnt have it and people use it and i just read a post saying not to give omega 6, so now i am confised...someone help please!

thanks

~Erin,

Ski

The Grizzly salmon oil I looked at appears to have just a small amount of omega 6 compared to the omega 3.  I've heard that Grizzly is good stuff,  but the recommendation I got (from the dogfoodproject) was for Seapet, so that's what I use.  The Seapet doesn't have any omega 6 in it.

Here is my opinion.  The Grizzly oil looks good but it does add Omega 6 and most foods already have that in them.  In that case they are uneccessary (and may throw off the balance of Omega 3 & 6) You will also have to add Vit E when using this formula but that isn't a big deal, you can get it pretty cheaply.  I personally am using the Seapet oil now.  It has the E added so I don't need to supplement.  The concentration of DHA/EPA in the grizzly formula is significantly less per teaspoon, so if you need to give higher doses you could see more diarrhea.  I like the more concentrated forma as Jack needs very high doses of Omega's ( I give him 2 teaspoons a day and that also adds 400IU of E to his diet daily)  I have seen great results since changing to Seapet.  Either of those oils look good though and the price comparison is about the same.  My one piece of advice though is that it has been found that the pumps given with some of these oils can cause the oils to oxidize and spoil quicker so I would not use the pump that comes with the Grizzy oil.

Thank you both, that is really helpful! but with the seapet, can you give your dog too much vitamin e, like would the 400 be too big a dosage for a small puppy?

Well, for starters you should be dosing the amount the bottle says, so say your dog is under 30lbs. The label says to give 1/2tsp, (I give Jeter 1/4tsp and he is 12lbs.) that would dose 100 IU of Vit. E a day. Jack on the other hand has autoimmune issues and at 14lbs I gove him roughly 2tsp totaling 400 IU of E a day. Now Ski may disagree with me here: after extensive research at this point MOST of what I read states that dogs and cats are not as prone to overdosing on Vit E as us humans are. Dogs are more likely to lack E than they are to be overdosed with it. Dogs with immune issues, allergies, skin issues such as hot spots etc. have all shown to have benefited enormously from adding anywhere from 200 Units for a small dog up to 600 Units for a large dog per day. So in your case, you are not going to be giving these doses anyways. 1/4tsp to 1/2 tsp of oil for a small dog will not overdose him in Vit. E IMO. I would though start him out slow if he is very young and small, higher doses quick can cause diarrhea. Maybe give 1/8tsp for a week or so then go to 1/4 and if you so choose up tp 1/2tsp when he is a little bigger. So now don't get me wrong that a dog could never have too much Vit E, but in the case of your dog getting 50-100IU of Vit E a day from the Seapet oil, I would say no.

thanx thats very helpful. and im sure there are directions and other warnings on the bottle as well, the info about the pump bottle was very helpful too, yeah its esier to just squirt but if it spoils quicker, then its not a big deal to just get the teaspoons out lol
