Moose, our lab, has a beautiful coat - every one comments on how shiny he is. BUT he has dandruffy dry skin (esp when you give him a good scratch or brush him). He is a sensitive skin and stomach kind of guy, he is allergic to cedar. I am currently feeding him Beneful Original (I am sure it has some filler in it) which is what his previous owner fed him.

Now that we are getting Paisley, I'd love to find something they can both be transitioned on to (is this possible)?. The local pet store recommended California Naturals Chicken and Rice. Any suggestions?

I feed my two Innova EVO. Geigh has very sensitive skin and and sheds. She also has a very sensitive stomach. This food is grain free and has no fillers. I was feeding Beneiful before and I see a tremendous difference.

At the very least you should add some fish oil to Moose's diet - it will help his coat.

I feed my Sam Canidae all life stages. Others on here feed Blue buffalo, Innova/EVO, Natural Balance, and solid gold. Moose probably has try skin because Beneful is a very low quality food. Also, most dog foods (even the better ones) don't have enough Omega 3s and 6s. Try picking up some fish oils. If you do, you will also have to give your lab vitamin E supplements or get a fish oil that already has the vt. E added.

If you want to do some research about dog food, try these sites:

Also, if you're curious, here is what makes Beneful a low quality food:

http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=main

http://dogfoodanalysis.com/

Ingredients in Beneful Original:

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

The first ingredient is Ground Yellow Corn. Ingredients are weighed and listed from heaviest to lightest, so the the first ingredients make up most of the product. Corn is concidered a low quality grain and should NEVER be one of the first ingredients.

There are only three meat products, all of low quality. It is impossible to determin the quality of a by-products, but it is usually of low quality consisting of feet, feathers, undeveloped eggs, ect. As for digest, the AAFCO defines it as "A material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers." On top of that, both animal fat and animal digest are of an undetermined origin and can be any kind of animal from roadkill, 4D animals, and even euthanized dogs and cats.

Soy flour is processed grain that has lost much of it's nutritional value.

Sugars have no place in a dog food what so ever.

Many dog foods have a little bit of salt, but it should be nowere at the top of the list and should be one of the last ingredients.

ALL the artificial colorings in this food are either proven to cause health issues or have incunclusive tests.

Sulfates and oxides are poorly digested, however they are no harmful as far as I know.

phosphoric acid is an uneccesary ingredient used to flavor the food.

Vitamin K has been linked to many health problems.

People pills can be cracked open and put over the dog food.

I know the beneful is not a great food. we had an allergy problem when he first came home and I had to keep him on it (at the time I was trying to switch his food to better quality) - we figured out it was a contact allergy - now I feel like I can change the food. I think paisley is on solid gold.

Thanks for the info - I'd love to find something they can both be on - they are both active and lean and so I don't need to worry about one dog needing low fat or anything like that.

Solid Gold is decent and if she is on that why not see if he can tolerate it. That way you only have one in food transition (grin).

I lost the dosage information,  so I bought the regular Seapet fish oil without vitamin E and bought some liquid E separately.  I give Oscar, who weighs about 7 1/2 pounds,  2 or 3 drops,  which is 30 or 45 IU, per day.  The Seapet with vit E in it has 200 IU per teaspoon.  The Seapet dosage for the little ones is a 1/4 teaspoon a day, I think, which is 50IU.  Lucky, at about 20 pounds, gets a half teaspoon of Seapet and 6 or 7 drops, which is 90-105 IU.

I bought this vitamin E online last time.     http://www.houseofnutrition.com/733739009104.html

I ended up buying the small bites chicken/turkey based Innova Evo. I am going to see how they both do on it. It is spendy but you end up feeding them considerably less than the food with fillers. I've started a slow transition already.

Hi Maggie, you might want to start a new thread so it gets seen. The rash could be from a grass allergy, a detergent allergy, a food allergy or something else. If her skin is dry though chances are she could use more oils in her diet as recommended above in this thread. Have you taken her to the vet for it?
