Hi All,

We adopted a second Rat Terrier, about two months ago.  He had many poop accidents until we realized he had impacted anal glands.  Once the antibotics kicked in, that issue was for the most part resolved.

He is now having significant pee accidents.  In fact, he often wakes me up in the night AFTER he has had an accident by the back door.  He obviously knows he needs to go out, as they are always by the back door.

The first few weeks we expected issues, because he is not a very vocal dog, and we often didn't realize he needed to go out.  My other Rat Terrier will stand on my chest  and lick my face if he needs to go out in the night!

lol.  Do you think this is a training issue, or a health issue?  He is about three years old. Of course the previous owners said he was house trained, but they kept him locked in a laundry room at night.

I'm not convinced that kenneling is the only option.  But I am willing to try it if necessary.   These issues  seem to only happen at night.

How can he go all day, about six hours with out having an accident but then pee at night?  Should I cut off the water before bed time like you do for toddlers? Sorry for the long post, I'm looking for advice.

Thanks!

Kim

1) always rule out health issues since you can't train out a bladder infection (grin)
2) yes limit water 2 hours before bed time at least unless he's running around and really needs it
3) restricted access (like a crate or the laundry room) might help him to hold it

You might try taking him for a walk before bed - a short one where he has lots of peeing opportunities so he is totally 'empty' before bedtime.

Nothing to add to Bethany's advice, just rule out UTI and then ditto what she said! Good luck!

I agree with the suggestions from Gwacie... rule out health issues first and foremost. Once you do that... move forward and try the other suggestions.
