Poor Sassie and poor you Mari.  I know how hard it is to watch your baby sick.  I hope that all of those med's will help her find comfort through the night.    I don't know what those meds are, but I'm sure one must be for allergic reaction.  If not, maybe a little benedryl will help.  I would just watch her closely and make sure she is drinking.

Good luck tonight.  I'll say a prayer for you both.

This is Sassie's second time around ....we left out the  leptro  this time hoping that it may have been the cause but they said she is real sensitive and will give her benadryl next time before doing and shots....or maybe no shots just rabies....we will see....Last time we caught it fast  this time it took longer to come out...

Oh gosh Mari, I'm so sorry she had to go through that. Poor baby! Maybe just rabies next year, like you said...Mayfly is so prone to allergies (which got worse after having the whole shot regiman for 3 years in a row) that I'm skipping this year with her. She had her rabies shot only.

Thanks everyone....I was scared but at least I know what not to do and to do thanks to all of  rt. telling their stories.....It helps to learn from first hand knowledge and just not guessing...

We discussed Sassie's and other ratties allergies and the vet said that I could start giving Sassie (  Claritin  1/2 tab or 1/4  tab  ) tell me what you all think...

Oh my goodness! Poor Sassie has such bad luck. I personally would be done with all shots now if I were you. Her immune system is getting way over-taxed and the reactions are bound to get worse now everytime. You also increase the chance of causing an auto-immune reaction that never goes away. These vaccines protect a lot longer than vets admit and most likely Sass is protected for life at this point. I hope she is feeling better today, sweet girl. Tell her her brother lovers her and sends kisses!! As for the claritin....I have no idea!

We are giving Skipper Claritin right now, 1/2 tab, for his allergies. His only act up in the spring each year but really kick his little butt because he coughs so much. I can't really say that it's working any better than the Benedryl, both help him.

Mari, just an FYI, if you use Claritin make sure it is NOT Claritin D, the pseudophedrine can be toxic.

OH poor girll! You might see if your vet will run titers on her to see if she even needs the vaccines in question. Hope she feels better soon.

How scary for you both! I think I'd agree with Sarah on this one. I don't think I'd give my dog anymore shots if she has these bad reactions. At least not for quite a few years and only one shot on any given occasion. Poor baby.

So sorry!! We just went thru this as well. Gizmo's whole face sweled up, chin and neck. Her gums were very dark. It was so scary. They gave her injections of benadryl and steriods and told us to give her one benadryl pill 3 times a day for 5 days as precautionary-as the vaccine is still in the system. For her allergies we give her 1 benedryl twice a day. I will only give my dogs the rabies vaccine every year that is it!!! Too scary to go thru, I am sorry you were by yourself.

I was also told that Gizmo will need benadryl and steriod injection with any more vaccines and the vaccines must be 3 weeks apart. Well we will only do rabies for now on. BUT I did read dogs with allergies should never be vaccinated during allergy season. I thought that was very interesting!!!!

I think Illinois has a three year rabies vaccine.  I'd call around to see if you can find a vet that offers it.

Our Sonic had the same problem with his shots last time.  He is only etting the rabies from now on. Vet advised us to just do that.   Our state (Wisconsin) also has the three year vaccine.  He did not have the rabie at the same time.  We have them spaced out so that Sydney an sonic do not get their different shots on the same day nor do they get their individual shots together.  Would be cheaper at the vet but if one as a reaction then I only hae to deal with one.  I dont have to handle both of them if they both were to have a reaction.
