Hi everyone!  I am taking Zoe tommorow for her annual checkup.  I have been doing a lot of reading lately about whether or not to vaccinate on a yearly basis.  I am feeling a little overwhelmed about the issue.  Also, we are going to a new vet so I am not sure what his view on this is.  Are there any vaccines that you definitely do not get, and if so, why?  My biggest concern is over the Lepto shot.  She has not had any reactions before due to vaccinations but I have a  9 yr old husky that had a horrible reaction to her last rabies shot.  She had never had any reactions to shots either.  I think I am more nervous about going to a new vet.  I just don't want to be pressured into vaccinating so I am trying to gather as much information as I can.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The lepto shot is not needed for dogs that will not have any contact with rat pee. Farm dogs need it, cause lets face it no matter how clean you keep your barn rats will live there too. Most city, apartment, and inside dogs won't need it. And it is rat pee not mouse pee that they get it from. Big difference there. And only you know whether there is a chance of your dog coming into contact with it. For many dogs the chances are so small it is not needed.

Sonic had a major reaction to his distemper shot this last time.  Major swelling in is shoulders and neck.  Vet is advising us not to get the shot again.

The only vaccination mine get anymore is for rabies.   I believe the tests that show that the parvo and distemper vaccinations are good for at least 7 years, and possibly for life,  if given to a dog after the age of six months.  So in my opinion, once the puppy shots and the one year boosters are given, I'll only vaccinate for rabies after that.

I'd feel more comfortable with a new vet.  You just tell them the way it's going to be.  I had to call 4 or 5 before I found one that would give the 3 year rabies vax.  I told her I wouldn't be getting any other shots.  If they say you have to get distemper or parvo shots,  you can always just walk out.

Sassie is going tomorrow for her shots last year she had a bad reaction to the lepto so no more of that....as in what Susan said unless your dog is an avid hunter they don't need the lepto....

Thank you to those who responded. Zoe's annual vet visit went great yesterday. I decided not to do shots on an annual basis. Mari, I read your post on Sassies vet visit and that is the exact reason why I had decided against annual DHPP. I am sorry you had to go through that and I hope she is feeling much better today. I ended up really liking the vet that we went to. Actually I liked the entire staff....they all LOVED Zoe. In fact, even though they had to put her in a headlock to draw blood for the HW test they were amazed her tail was wagging at 100mph...lol. Thanks again for your responses.
