So I am new, i am hopefully getting a little rattie of my own soon and so i have been preparing and came across this site and it has answered a lot of questions, concerns, and worries i have come up with but now i am wondering, does anyone just let their dog hop in the shower with them in the morning or at night? if so do they like it? ive read and heard from others that their dog just sits and watches their people in the bath or shower and could just picture some people doing this haha
oh and any new advice that anyone wants to throw in would be greatly appreciated i am trying to prepare for this new change and i am too excited for my own good!!! hehe
thanx,
~Erin |

Hello and congrats on getting your own rattie!
In my experience, ratties DO NOT like water...I've only heard about 2 on this site that don't really mind, and Bailey is the only rattie I've heard of that likes water. Whenever My rattie, Sam, has to take a bath, he just stands in the tub and scowls at me the whole time. Some owners have to fight their ratties to give them bathes. It isn't good to bathe them a lot either, because it strips the oils out of their fur and dries their skin.
Ratties are wonderful companions! They are also a pretty high energy dog, so you will have to walk yours daily when/if he is an adult. They are also very intelligent and seem to get bored with training sessions easily. About 5 minutes of obedience training like teaching him to sit/stay should be enough each day...any longer sessions and they'll lose interest, especially as puppies.
Just scroll down and look at some more of the posts on the health/diet and the training threads. |

We have a separate shower from the tub and there is not enough room for them but mine love to take baths We fill the tub with water and tell them to go swimming and they fly into the tub. I will post pictures of them in indoor swimming also they love to go to the lake or river. |

I think that if you started them as a pup, they would like to jump in the shower. Lucy would not though. She doesn't like the water so much. Well, at least not on her face. Have to wash that last in her baths because that is her boiling point where she wants out now. Other than that she is very good, just stands there and let me do my thing. I have read both that you shouldn't wash them too often, and it doesn't matter. Lucy gets dandruff after a bath, so I started using a conditioner after the shampoo and have no problems anymore. I'm sorry, where are my manners, welcome to the group. |

Another thing you should know is not to get any stuffed toys for a rat terrier. They are skilled toy de-stuffers. The only stuffed toy I've heard of that can stand up to a rattie and last a while are those 'bo bo' toys (also called luffa dogs) and even some can rip up those! So at least don't get any stuffed toy with a squeaker, so that he doesn't choke on it if he does get it open. I have a Kong toy that had been Sam's since he was a pup (although it's starting to come apart now) a plastic fish toy that has a huge rip in it, and a tennis ball that had mysteriously disappeared. Also, while we're at it, have you looked up anything on dog nutrition? |

I've been wanting to get Sam a bo bo for some time, but they're so darn expensive! Here's two sites you can look at about dog food/nutrition. The first has a lot of information, and the second is a review of different dog food brands: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ http://dogfoodanalysis.com/ Here's a page from dogfoodproject.com about what you should avoid/look for: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=betterproducts |

I, along with several others here, use the buddy wash shampoo and conditioners. It is a lavender mint scent and is great, they have come out with two new scents too. As for food, there is a large variety out there to chose from. It is a hard decision I think at first. Lucy was a very picky eater as a pup, well, lets not lie she still is. Currently I feed her Merrick brand dog food. But I have heard great things about Innova, Royal Canin, Natural Balance, Wellness, etc. There are several discussions about types of foods in the health/diet section. Great information can be found there. Typically the brand of dog food you choose will also make a treat. But they make treats that are dried chicken that the dogs love and are good for them. So much fun stuff goes into gathering all of this for a new pup. |
