Grooming time is a disaster. I don't know what to do anymore. She hates her bath and scratches the mess outta me trying to get out of the tub. I've even tried treats. Brushing is also a mess. She tries to bite whoever is doing it. She just doesn't like it. I know I'm not hurting her but she just doesn't like it. Its been this way since she was a puppy. I try to bathe her once a week. I figured she'd eventually get used to it but she hasn't. She is like 10 months now. I've thought of taking her to a groomer, but I don't know how much it would cost or anything. Does anyone else have this bathtime problem??? If so, what do you do??

I wouldn't think taking her to a groomer wouldn't cost so much annually. Rat Terriers don't need bathes that often.
How often do you bathe her?

I took my Boxer to a groom once a month because he was just too big to give a bath in the tub!!  When you take to the groomer, they call it a bath (no haircut involved).  My groomer also clipped his nails and expressed his anal glands (worth every penny!!).  Only charge me about $20 for all of that.  And, they kept him most of the day so it's always an adventure.  He loved it.

Otherwise, try using the hose outside (if it's not too cold).  Maybe your puppy doesn't like the way the bathroom echoes.  Or he's picking up on your anxiousness and playing on it.  Good luck!!

I bathe her once a week because she is an inside dog and my mother requires that she is bathed once a week...my mom doesn't like housedogs and I had to move home so we've had to make some adjustments. She got spayed so she hadn't had a bath in about 4 weeks and she had one today it was like I was trying to kill her!!!

once a week is too much to bath a rattie, or any dog really.
Try explaining to your mom that it isn't healthy for your dog. It dries out the skin and strips away the natural oils. This causes dandruff, hairloss, and can make a worse mess than if you didn't bathe your dog once a week. Once a month is the most you should bathe a rattie.

If it's just the smell, why not try some of the doggy wipes.  She may not find that to be as frustrating as an actual bath.  And I agree, once a week is way overboard.

she gets smelly if she doesn't have a bath. I talked to my vet and they said once a week was fine, but I use the soap-free shampoo.

Dogs are going to smell...they tend to do that. Mimzy smells, but it isn't that bad. It's usually after she's been outside in the rain. I do not give her a bath that often. I found some great doggy wipes that I wipe her down with, then dry her off with a towel. It eliminates the smell and has aloe in it to keep from drying out her coat.

My rattie, Sam, might smell if you stick your face right up to their fur and inhale. Other than that, the only thing my rattie smells up are places that he usually lies down on, like his bed.
Even if you have a soap-free shampoo or some other kind of 'special' shampoo, it still isn't good for your dog. Try the doggy wipes like dnorton suggested. You won't have to pay to go to the groomers, you won't have to fight your dog every week just to keep her clean, and it will get rid of that 'doggy odor'. I suppose they still have to be bathed every so often even with the doggy wipes, dnorton?

Yeah, but not that often. My vet said every two weeks, but Mims stays indoors and doesn't get dirty. Doggy wipes work great! I have had her since December and have only bathed her twice; once at home and once at PetSmart (my hubby gave her a gift card for Christmas!) The doggy wipes are wonderful and she likes the extra "scratches and rubs" she gets. You could also try airing out her bedding once a week. I have found that is where most of the doggy smell comes from. Take her bedding outside, shake really well and spray with febreeze.

Would baby wipes with the aloe in them work as well? They'd be a lot cheaper per wipe. lol...that's me...cheap.

I use a grooming mitt rather than a brush on my ratties. Some brushes can hurt when you brush, but the mitt has a soft side for rubbing dead hair off and a rough textured side for itches. My doggies love it. There are also dry bathes avalible too. You can rub cornmeal in the hair and softly brush it out as a way of cleaning without water too. There are many ways to clean your dog without bathing them.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!
