We are going to be getting our first rattie puppy around the end of May. We put a deposit on it, and haven't picked it yet.   Very reputable breeder, we don't care whether it's male/female, we just want the "right" one for us.  Anywho, I was wondering how much a rattie pup normally eats. I know that on a bag of say EVO, it'll say 1 C. per day. If I were to buy an 8 lb bag or so, how long do you think it would last for that one puppy?  Thanks for the help! Miranda

I would think that the one pound bag for a puppy would last 3-4 weeks. I would just take a close look at the feeding instructions. I feed Lucy about 1 1/2 cup of Merrick a day, she weighs 20 pounds. But I would definitely only buy a small bag of dog food when he/she is a puppy because often these dogs tend to be picky eaters. Went through 2 or 3 types of foods before finding one that Lucy would eat as a puppy.

PS congratulations on the new puppy and welcome to the group. There is a ton of information to be found on here.

Thanks. I was thinking of sticking with the EVO because that is what the breeder feeds. She definitely recommends crate training also. (I did this with our last pup, and it worked great. Will most certainly be doing again!) We had a JRT that we ended up having to get rid of, because he couldn't stop biting my then 3 yr old daughter. We read and read about the Rat terriers, their behaviors with children, etc., then went to see this breeders adult dogs. They LOVED my daughter, who is a little "Elmira". lol. We wanted a RT, but we didn't want to jump in without seeing how they actually acted around her. It's one thing to read something, another thing to be exposed to it. And the breeder said she won't place a puppy in a home that she doesn't think it will be a good match for. We are all really excited.

good for you!! looks like you found a good !responsible breeder!!! get to know the sire and dam too its a good indication of what you can expect the pup to be(most of the time) and they will(or should )help you with rearing of your new baby and when you ready for #2 you'll go back to them(you'll need 2!!!)WATCH!!!and welcome!!!

EVO is a great food...my girls love it. A large bag (28 lbs) lasts about 1 1/2 months here...my ratties are both around 30 lbs.
Sounds like you're doing your homework and trying to do your best to provide a great home for your new pup...he/she will be lucky to have you. A lot of people end up getting a second rattie...they help wear each other out.

Welcome to the world of ratties, Miranda!

The amount of food you will need to feed your dog and how long a bag will last depends on the brand of dog food and your dog's metabolism. You will need to feed your dog more on a low quality food (Like Pedigree, Iams, Beneful) because it does not have enough 'good stuff' (proteins, vitamins, minerals) and you'll have to make up for it. Better foods (Like EVO/Innova, Natural Balance, Canidae) have more protein and all other 'stuff' (don't know how else to put it) so you won't have to feed as much. I'd start with the recommended amount on the bag, and decrease/increase it according to her needs. All dogs have different metabolisms and other factors, so the recommended amount on the bag might not be right for your pup.

If you want to read up on dog nutrition, here are two sites that I use a lot...the first is a review of dog foods, the other is basic information on dog nutrition:

EVO is a very good dog food that is grainless, so you won't have to worry about grain allergies. Here is the ingredients in the EVO small bites:

"Turkey, chicken, turkey meal, chicken meal, potatoes, herring meal, chicken fat, natural flavors, egg, apples, tomatoes, potassium chloride, carrots, vitamins, garlic, cottage cheese, minerals, alfalfa sprouts, ascorbic acid, dried chicory root, direct-fed microbials, vitamin E supplement, lecithin, rosemary extract"

Great ingredients that are of good quality. No grains, by-products, artificial preservatives or flavorings, no colorings, and all meat sources are identified. The only concern is that EVO has a very high protein level (43.16%) and some people believe that high levels of protein are not good for a puppy. I really don't believe it...Here's an article you can read about it on one of the above sites I mentioned:

http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=protein_myth

I see you've been doing your doggy homework...your pup will be very lucky!
