I used to free feed Cyrus, but when I took him to the vet, they asked me if he was eating normally, and I had no idea. In order to monitor his intake, I started feeding him twice a day. I started with the recomendation on the bag, which I believe is 3/4 cup. He wasn't finishing it, so I went down to 1/2. Well, recently, he has been eating it all and then he'll sit there and lick the bowl until I give him more. Now he's eating 3/4 cups twice a day, and still acting like I'm starving him. Licking the bowl, eating things off the floor and the ground, begging for table scraps...How do I be sure he's getting enough without over feeding him? He can't still be growing at a year, can he?

Dogs will act like they're starving even if they're getting plenty of food. Is his weight good? Can you see a "waist" on him or is he too fat? Or is he too ribby...i.e. too thin? If he looks good and has plenty of energy then he's getting enough food. You can always give him low cal snack to help fill him up like baby carrots, snap peas, canned no-salt green beans, etc.

His weight and size are great. So should I keep him on the half cup twice a day I was feeding him before, or the 3/4 he seems to think he needs now? I've tried baby carrots and green beans. He chews up the carrots and spits them out all over the house, and picks the green beans out of his food. Not a big fan of the veggies I guess.

Since the vet says he's in good shape, I wouldn't worry about it...my dog begs all the time. Sam's constantly trying to sneak into the kitchen while we're cooking, and is always carrying his dish around like he's starving. If you really are worried, maybe you could try adding a little canned pumpkin (regular pumpkin, NOT the pie filler) as a sort of filler. Just mix it in with his dog food.

Savanna acts like she is starving too. She gets 1/2 cup in the am/pm plus green beans and/or  carrots. She also gets bully sticks and Dried chicken breast strips! She ain't hungry, just acts that way. She is back down to her weight of 10 pounds, from 12.5. She looks great!! Good Luck too you!
