Reni is 8 mths old, and her little 5 lb body decided to go into her first heat today...That means denim panties for the next week, which means it will include our trip to Tennessee...My boys are not acting too bad...dunno, should I cancel our trip? Is it going to drive the other males crazy? I have already booked our cabin, and taken vacation from work...aaarrgh! I just hope Brielle does not follow suit...

Hey Donna,
Just got on today, haven't been on for awhile. I have always had spayed or neutered dogs so I can't be much help. I don't think you should cancel.

What route are you taking to Sweetwater?

Aloha,

Sorry Donna, I'm not going so I can't say, plus all my dogs are always altered so I've not had to deal with heat cycles when I had both males and females (had a show dalmatian when I was young but no boys).

She'll be quite the male magnet, for sure. As long as you hold her, it should be OK. Frankly, I just don't know what a LOT of males around this scent would act like. In the past I've only had to deal with one female dachshund in heat around just one male I had in my fenced yard expressly to breed her with.

I think they erect a portable mesh fence of sorts at the Jamboree so dogs can run around off leash. The event is open to the public and Susan over on SE-RT said she already has 70 RSVP's for Friday cookout and they usually get twice as many people on Saturday as Friday. A lot of in-tact males pestering her (and you) might get annoying after awhile. LOL Check with your vet, Donna. Seems like one of my vets over the years told me there is something you can give a female to "kill the odor".

As long as her heat is in the beginning stages you should not have "alot" of problems. With Mia she sought out her "company" by sneaking out the door and finding our male but that was on the last few days of her heat. The males might et jumpy and twitchy but should not be aggressive becuase she is in the beginning stages. Just do not leave her alone but if you have to make sure she is in a place that no other dogs can get to her and that she cannot get to them. It might be uncomfortable and awkward but protecting her is the best thing to do. Mia pushed her way out of her pen and got out the door at 2:am to find the male....Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there Donna, I would just keep her pants on all the time! Some females are shy about the heat and some all of a sudden blossom out into vamps! With the pants on chances are she won't be bred, I would not let her just run loose with the boys or girls though. It could cause fights with other girls more than anything. With the way that every females heat cycle is different, she could be bred early, You just can't tell until it is time and she stands for the boys. But too, there are females that just like to breed and will stand for the boys way before they are fertile and after too. So you might want to keep her crated on and off during the day just so you can get a rest from being Mom the eagle eyed chaparone!

Right now she is acting like she is in trouble or something. I have the denim panties on her, so the blood is not getting everywhere. I was surprised this morning, when I took them all four to get their nails clipped, and held her up to get them trimmed, and noticed the leakage. I think she will stay close, because she is a very shy little girl.

I guess I'm wondering why she is 8 months old hasn't been spayed yet?

In the agility "world", some people are also breeders and if their bitch is in heat... they do not bring them to shows because it's way too distracting to the other male dogs. I would think having a dog who is in heat would be very distracting... but that's just my opinion.

I agree, it would seem to be very distracting in a situation where the dogs are already excited. And panties don't always prevent a breeding. It's so much nicer having spayed females!

I agree with Nora & Mitzy's Mom, not only about why she hasn't been spayed but the distraction to others. Bringing a female in heat is chaos waiting to happen, not to mention being unfair to the other owners who will be attending with their dogs intending to relax and have a wonderful time.

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

Well, the timing is not the greatest, Donna, but if Reni is used to being crated, and you dont mind keeping her crated some of the time and away from the dogs that are running loose, I dont see any reason why you shouldnt come. Another option might be to leave her home with a family member or good friend?  Just thinking out loud here......

Donna, If you could leave her home with someone or board her for the weekend, that really would be best. I am not so much concerned about your dog as I'm sure you would keep her safe, but I'm worried about the effect on all the others...we're going to have a pretty large dog "pack" at the Jamboree and an already high level of excitement. I would hate for all those hormones to kick in and push that excitement over the top.

I expect that most, if not all of the males attending will be neutered, however even neutered males are often excited by a female in heat....which could make them testy or aggressive with each other...which would mean EVERYbody would have to keep their dogs on-leash and be constantly on guard.

If you do bring her, you will absolutely have to keep her totally segregated from all the other dogs, and if that doesn't work, we will ask you to remove her from the Jam area altogether. Like I said though, it really would be best if you could just leave her at home.

Well said Susan. The Jamboree really is not the place to bring a female who is in heat.

WE USE TO GIVE OUR FEMALE DOGS SHOTS WHEN WE DID NOT BRED THEM.  dO THEY STILL HAVE THEM? GOOD IDEA FOR THE ONE THAT WANTS TO TAKE A FEMALE IN HEAT TO THE JAMBOREE.  tHIS MAY SAVE ALOT OF GREIF.

I believe the shot you're speaking of is a "Mis-Mate".  It does not help with the disruption that can be caused by a female in heat around a group of dogs.  Unfortunately, after reading all the posts regarding this dog, it seems that she is upsetting her males, and she only noticed the spotting recently.  It could have been going on for a while before the spotting started.  Sometimes, this is called a silent heat.

There is a rule, in the "fine print" section of the Jamboree website, that says that disruptive dogs will not be allowed.  There are people coming from far away to have an enjoyable time at the Jam, and a disruption with a bitch in heat is not something that is good, nor will it be allowed.  I'm sorry, but I really believe that she should leave her dog at home, or board it at the vet's office.
