Hey I was just curious if anyone has ever had this prob??  I noticed tonight that Gracie has worms.  My vet is closed so I called the emergency vet they said that we cant treat the mom while she is nursing....but she did also say to check with my vet and make sure that there is not anything that I can give her.  The vet says it sounds like tape worms Anyway they get the tape worms from eating a flea and I gave her advantage yesteday to take care of the flea problem.....dont worry it wont hurt the pups.  Just wanting to know if anyone knew the answer to my prob.  thanks

Hollie

You poor thing...

You finally get to spend some time with the pups and are having all of these problems.

It seems like Gracie has quite a bit of issues going on...from being very thin, to fleas, to worms...doesn't sound good for a dog that just gave birth. I'm sure the fleas and worms may be a factor in her weight. Although, I would think if she had been taken to the vet regularly he/she would have been taking care of this. Have the pups been getting their check-ups to make sure they are okay?

I've never had a dog with worms, so I don't know that many details and especially with a nursing female...but good luck with everything.

Ask the vet for sure - tapeworms are tough and I don't think there is a safe cure for them for nursing bitches. That would explain why she is extra thin though.

yeah I am going to call my vet first thing in the morning. I am thinking that is why she is so thin. I went today and bought her some cottage cheese....she LOVES it...it is also one of Baileys favs. I am giving her peanut butter also....more protein will help but as long as those worms are sucking on her I dont know what else to do
Anyway I will find out tomm!!!!

Even if you can't treat her until the pups are weaned the extra food will help. Maybe the vet will know some way to get rid of them while she's nursing though. No wonder she was so thin...

Maybe you could feed her diatomaceous earth.  It's not a poison so it wouldn't affect the pups.  It is microscopic shells of tiny sea creatures and it cuts open the bugs and the powder dehydrates them.  The  shells are small enough that they won't harm the dog.  It can be rubbed into the dogs coats also to kill fleas the same way, since you have to get rid of the fleas to get rid of the worms.

If you use it, make sure to use food grade DE, which, I believe is sold in garden supply type stores.  The wrong kind to use is sold at swimming pool supply stores and used in filters and is harmful to eat or breathe.

Hey Ski where did you find that info? I searched last night to see what holistic methods might be considered and found almost nothing for tape worms.

No wonder she is so skinny! Can she pass the worms on to the puppies? You should probably be sure to pick up and dispose of her poop as soon as she goes to potty.

I was looking up info on diatomaceous earth and stumbled on it.  I may use this type of stuff this year instead of Frontline Plus.  Hopefully my guys are healthy enough that they are distasteful to fleas,  but if I go to my cousins cabin around June I may give them both a dose of Frontline anyway.

This was one of the sites I found.     http://www.carefreepet.com/natural_flea_control.html

i spoke with my vet this morning and she gave me some meds to get rid of these worms. She said it was prob tape worms and the pups prob dont have them due to the fact u can only get them by eating a flea or her poop. So the pups are okay although Im sure they have worms b/c all pups do but I am getting them wormed in 2 weeks when they are 6 weeks old

Well, let's hope between the worms being treated and getting some more food in her, Gracie starts to improve

I generally worm my pups starting at 4 weeks, and I get worms out of them too. There are some milder wormers that you can use on small pups.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!
