Hi everyone!  I have a question about choosing a heath plan for Zippy... I'm wondering on what are the essential things that are needed to be included in this plan, and if they all include treatments if she hurts herself and needs treatment?  She had her first vet visit on 10/10/06 and I was looking through her paperwork and saw that she's due for Bordatella, DHPP, and her Rabies shot.  I know the Rabies are for sure needed, as well as the heart worm, but i'm wondering on the other two and if there is anything else that I should be aware of?
Thank you!

Welcome to the site!! Do you havee any pics? Sorry ,no help here. The whole pet insurace is confusing to me and seems overly priced. I would love to hear more about it though, I just can't figure the plans out!

lol, i uploaded the pic in the wrong spot! Zippy usually waits for us on the desk chair in the bedroom or on the bed when we're in the shower, but this one paticular day we found her in the laundry basket! lol It was too cute that we had to take a picture of it.
As for the plans, they're confusing to me to, but i'm also going to do some research on them but it's hard for a first time pet owner, well i had gunnie pigs before but they didn't need plans. When we got her from the humane society they wern't very helpful in that part, they looked at us as two kids who shouldn't own a dog even though we're adults. It's been frustrating.

I think vaccination requirements vary some state to state, you might check to see if the County her liscense is from has a website that details required vaccines. Generally Rabies shots are a 1 or 3 year, so if she got one in October, she probably doesn't need another until this October. If you have picked a vet, I would ask what they recommend for dogs in your area, they also might have some advice regarding insurance plans.
Also, if you plan to have her boarded, like if you go away on vacation, those places sometimes have certain vaccination requirements.
I have heard of companies that offer their employess group rates on pet insurance, wouldn't hurt to ask your employer.

Your vet probably has a plan he/she uses for all dogs. I can tell you though that my newest, Skipper, we got from a shelter and he vet record from there quite clearly stated he was overdue for a Bordatella shot. I took him for an exam and whatever else he needed from MY vet but my vet told me that unless I was going to board him someplace he didn't need the Bordatella....which I thought was cool because he could have made a few extra dollars giving him a shot he didn't need.

Rabies shots are a legal requirement. There is a new way of thinking on the other shots that dogs not only don't need them every year but that it's not good for them. Some vets are going this way now...not mine so far though. I've always gotten the usual shots each year. Oh, one thing though, don't let your vet give your rattie the "lepto" shot (doesn't look like he does as you don't have an "L" in the DHPP) but it can cause a bad reaction in small dogs. One of the members on here just had that experience.

I don't know anything about health plans but the American Animal Hospital Association's 2006 vaccine guidelines say the rabies vax can be given as early as 3 months of age and the 2nd vax should be 1 year following the 1st  and every 3 years from then on. (if the 3 year vax is legal and available in your area)

Bordetella is a non-core vaccine and recommended to be given one week prior to anticipated exposure. If you're not showing or boarding your dog, it's not needed. The only core vaccines are rabies, distemper, hepatitis, and parvo. I think the last 3 are given in one shot, the DHP. Maybe it's only available as the DHPP shot. I think the main thing is that you DON'T get the Leptospirosis vax(DHLPP), but it looks like your vet already knows that.

edited to add---DUH, I guess I should have read MB's post first.

Unless there are rrats in your area the dog is exposed to. Ratties that chase rats and mice and squirells and catch them need the lepto shot. It is a nasty disease that humans can get too.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

On the chasing squirrles, Zippy does do that but we have her on an extenable leash and she never catches them and they get away way too quickly before she can catch them so i'm not to worried on that one. She doesn't chase after rats or mice, she actually hides from them. lol
Zippy is going to be 3 in October so the vet we took her to said that she's going to need the rabies shot this year, then in like two years i think and then every some odd years i think. I can't remember but i'm sure that i'm going to be reminded by the vet we decide to take her to. The vet we took her to the first time is way too expensive and the reason we took her there that time was because the humane society paid for the major chunk of it. I also didn't like some of the staff. I'm trying to find something that's not expensive, not cheap, but right in the middle that will save us money in the long run and to make sure that she's taken care of no matter what the case may be. We don't have a lot of money, Michael's in grad. school for physics and i only have a part time job, which is all i can do, so... I've always found that the happy medium is the best way to go in any situation because you don't get the BS. It's hard trying to now find a vet for the first time because i'm not sure what to look for. Is there anything that could help with that so I don't have to take her to someone new every year for 5 year or more?

Are you looking for pet insurance like Banfield? I believe someone on here has that...Maybe Bratt/Debra? Not sure though.
