We just checked into our motel room for the weekend. Mom, Daisy and I. I took Daisy to the grass, first thing, though she wouldn't potty (which was normal cause she had just gone a couple hours ago) Anyway, I noticed a big patch of poison ivy - so I snatched her up and we left that area. Are ratties allergic to poison ivy??? Since we've been inside I've noticed that her tummy and underside is all pinker than usual. Am I just imagining it or could it be the lights in the motel room??? She's walking around whining and looking for something, don't know what. I brought her a couple of her toys and chews. She has food and water available. This is our first time on a trip. Any input would be appreciated. I love that they have hi speed internet, much better than our dial up at home.

Thanks, Peggy

I don't think ratties are too allergic to poison ivy. Try giving her some benedryl and see if it clears up.

She may be whining and looking around just because she is in unfamiliar surroundings.

Youcould always wipe her belly off with wash cloth in case something irritated her. I agree with Paul, too. The whining is likely because of the unfamiliarity of the hotel room.

This is what I found...

Dogs and other animals are not affected by poison ivy, but people can get the rash by petting a dog that's been exposed.

Poison Ivy
In General:

Poison ivy is a very common seasonal allergic skin reaction.

Leading Causes/Other Factors:

You must come in contact with the oils from the poison ivy plant to get poison ivy. The oils can stay active on your shoes, tools, and clothes for months. Dogs and other outdoor pets can carry the oil on their fur and spread poison ivy to their families. The fluid that oozes from your skin does not spread poison ivy.

Symptoms:

Poison ivy progresses from a red rash to raised bumps, to big vesicles that fill with fluid, to oozing of fluid, then drying and crusting over. Severe itching is a common symptom of poison ivy.

Of Note:

Poison ivy will usually run its course in 14 to 21 days. All of the treatments are to help with relief from the symptoms of poison ivy. They do not shorten the time for poison ivy to clear up. Most poison ivy symptoms may be treated with over the counter medications. If the poison ivy spreads to the eyes, throat, or becomes severe contact your physician.

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

When we stayed in a motel with Bob last year, he was antsy and wouldn't settle down easily. It's an unfamiliar place to her, so she has to sniff it all out.

Y'all are so reassuring. It's so nice to have someone to go to when in a panic. After I posted, I took Daisy out for a walk (in another area) and she has settled down quite nicely. I think the pinkness was just from the rather bright lighting in the bathroom here and for once she is really clean!!  - showing that pink skin off.  I had taken her yesterday for a bath and nail clipping. She's asleep right now on the pillow at my shoulder. So, thank you all so much for calming me down. Can't wait to see what tonight brings. I hope she doesn't do too much barking. Maybe this place will be quiet. Not too many people here yet, maybe it will stay that way. We're in a fairly rural town (Winnfield, LA).

Have a great weekend all!!
