I just got back from the vet. It seems that may little gal has a pinched nerve in her back. It started yesterday, suddenly. I left the house at 11:30 for some errands and when I came back at 2:30 she couldn't hardly walk and was hollering in pain when I touched her around her lower back. She was also showing the typical signs of walking crouched, tight abdomen and could't get on the bed, etc.

Of course, when I got to vet the this morning, she perked up! Typical He went ahead and gave her a steroid shot and an RX of tramadol, along with "bed rest" If she doesn't perk up in a few days or gets worse he will do some x-rays.

The ironic part about this is that I had stopped by pet smart yesterday while I was out and bought an elevated food and water bowl station.

She's almost ten years old and this could be the start of an on going thing. I hate to see the poor little thing like this. Even with past years of experience as a vet tech-I'm still such a softy!

I'm sorry to hear this, Rachel.... but surely the prednisone shot will make her feel better (hopefully). Yeah.... it's hard to watch them age. My oldest doxie will be 12 in August and he has slowed down considerably, but knock on wood.... so far no back issues! (Thank you, Lord!).
I do hope that by tomorrow Dixie is feeling much better!

Awww, I hope that she isnt in any pain today and heals up really quickly. Maybe the elevated bowls will help keep that from happening again.

Thanks y'all. She has already perked up a little. Nothing like a little fear of the vet to cure ya! I imagine that most of her problem is from jumping up and down off the bed and her favorite chair, and rough housing with Buddy-who is much younger.

I hate to do it but when I go to work, she will probably stay in the crate while I'm gone until she gets better. Fortunately I only work 3 (long...) days a week. And, it's a large crate. I just don't want her trying to get up on the bed with out me being here to lift her up. Hubby usually checks on them about mid afternoon when I work. He's self employed and can swing by easier than I can.

I guess that I'll try to get her on some glucosamine. I've been debating it for a while. I just hate giving them too much stuff. They already get fish oil/vit E.

Any suggestions out there on the glucosamine? I understand that it can cause bowel upsets. Don't want that. Thanks

I hope Dixie is feeling a little better. That has to be painful for her. Hopefully the prednisone will help.

I'm sorry Dixie is hurting. It's tough to watch as they age. Our little furry ones just don't live long enough to suit me!

Just reading this, I've gone through something similar with Skipper having a bad disk in his back. I've given mine treats with glucosamine in them but am contemplating giving them something else with glucosamine. Mitzy has grade 1 luxating patellas so I'd like to keep giving her and Skipper the glucosamine. That, regular exercise and keeping their weight down really seems to help.

Sorry to hear this.  Maye it's not the "start of an ongoing thing."  The steroid should provide immediate relief for your baby.  Had a dachshund who suffered a collapsed disk, rupture and paralysis.  Surgery corrected as best as that can ever be corrected.   He lived to be 17 and could walk and run, but his appearance and quality of life was certainly less than it would have been had the disk not ruptured.

That's good news. You might want to minimize her activity for a day or so, though. Steroids relieve the pain & inflammation, but the crate rest will help more with permanent healing.
