Sorry if this is a well covered subject.

I  was out in the yard picking up after the dogs and Missy had just done her biz. Well, she's got worms.

No wonder she's so thin.

I called the vet (he was just getting ready to leave) and he gives a shot and then a booster a couple of weeks later. He charges $40 per shot.

Missy may be going to her forever home this weekend. Can her vet give the booster? Are there different shots? I just want to make sure she's healthy and can get the correct booster if she leaves us this wekend.

I'm sure the vet can answer these questions tomorrow, but I value everyone's opinion around here.

I've never heard of a shot either. And $80 to get rid of worms seems pretty pricey.

I've never heard of a shot for worms. I would ask the vet. I know there are some good over the counter wormers you can buy at petco, petsmart called Safeguard that is about $10 and works well.

I am confused by the "shot" too. I would think she would be fine to follow up with her new vet. I personally wouldn't go with OTC worming meds. They just don't do the job as well and being that you are not even sure what she has, it is not the way to go IMO.

Common roundworms can be taken care of with a paste or a pill, but if she has tapeworms, they are a much harder parasite to get rid of, and my vet gives shots to eradicate them, also.  I think he charges $25 or so, and that's a LOT for him, so what your vet quoted sounds about right.

The pill I just got for Abby for Tape cost me $9.80! But if Barkley needs treatment it will be almost $50....but he weighs 111#'s.

Thanks Guys!!

We took her to the local Humane Society animal hospital for the shot. They charged $21.00.

That's more like it!
