I love to take bonnie with me every where I can and don’t want to leave her but I’m worried that someone is going to hit me and it scares me so I leave her at home. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a good way to keep her safe or should I just leave her at home? |

| They have plenty of different types of safety harnesses for pets in a car. I would check your local pet store. There are some that go on the seatbelt, and some box like contraptions that sit in a seat. Petco or Petsmart should have some. |

| Beth is right. There are some excellent harnesses and doggie car seats (so they are elevated and can see out the window). The car seats typically utilize a harness as well. |

| Lucy wears a seatbelt most of the time. She can wiggle out and knows it. So, lately on long trips (2 hours), she will get out and just sit or laydown in the spot. On short trips she stays in it. It is really strange. |

| Mine have been riding in seatbelt harnesses. Mitzy and Mayfly do great in them for long or short trips. |

they have a lot of crates or travel crates now too. some are really nice with mesh windows so the dog can see out or just a plain wire crate too. I think crates are the safest way to travel with a pet |

Absolutely... a crate is the safest way.. and the crate should be bungeed down! Case in point...(example)... My agility trainer was on her way week before last to Tulsa, OK to the agility nationals. She was involved in an accident... a 7-car pile up on the interstate. She was in a GMC Jimmy and it rolled 7 times and the car eventually landed on it's side (driver's side). Dara (her sheltie) was crated in a wire crate which was bungeed down. The crate remained in place... the dog was not injured. Had the dog been in anything other than a crate... who knows what would have happened. Neither of them were harmed, thank goodness... Mel was just banged up a bit, but nothing serious. Her car, however... is toast. |

| I should have added that I'm guilty of not always crating my dogs... especially if I'm going somewhere that isn't far from home. I have a carseat with a harness that I put Bailey in. But after what happened with Mel... I've been taking extra precautions! I crate him if we travel far distances (like to an agility trial), but I'm very guilty of just putting him in his carseat with I run to the store... or to training...so I'm doing better! |

I am very guilty of not crating my dogs. Alice likes her seatbelt but Fred NEEDS to be sniffing out the window. If we are going far they get crated but the Pet Supplies Plus runs I need to do better. |

| I'm doing better too... the accident that Melanie had was a wake-up call to me. You'd think I'd know better! But... as with so many other things... I take the quickest route. |

| I have one of those harnesses that strap into the seat belt for Rowdy. He doesn't care for it too much, but I can't fit a crate in the backseat for him. I looked into crates for him originally, because, as Nora said, I feel those are safer, but he won't get in the ones that will fit in my car. He lays calmly in the back and I figure at least he has limited movement if something should happen while he is strapped in. I found his at Petsmart. It's a black harness with some fleece lining for comfort. The nice part is that I can use it as a regular walking harness in a pinch, too. |

does the harness from petsmart click right into the seat belt or do you HAVE to also get the extra item that connects the two? ~Erin |

Here's what I got for my girls:
www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp
You attach the harness to the seatbelt and buckle the seatbelt like normal...you don't need to get anything else. |

| I was wondering about seat belts also. Mimzy rides in the seat laying down. I also have Progressive and just found out about the automatic coverage for pets. They ar esmart for doing that. I like the "boxes" that fit in the seat so they can look around. Some even have storage underneath for food, water, treats, etc. |

thank you, that was the one i was looking at and another just like it, but i didnt know if it went right into the seatbelt because there is another attatchment, but i think the extra attatchment just makes it linger so the dog can move a little more. are they able to lay down when wearing it? it only syas sit and stand but i figured youd know from experience. thanxs, ~Erin |
