Does anyone use Advantage Multi? I know it recently came out here in the US but it's been available in Europe for a while as Advocate. Advocate for Dogs kills fleas, prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm and controls mange and lice with monthly topical application. Sounds like a great product and can be ordered without prescription from Canadian Pet sites for about $35 for 3 pack.

Haven't tried the multi but I use Advantage regular for flea control. How does the Advantage Multi prevent heartworms? does it have ivermectin in it? Just curious because if so I might try it.

This is what it says:
Advantage MultiTM (imidacloprid + moxidectin) Topical Solution is to be administered monthly, and when applied directly to your pet's skin, prevents heartworm disease, kills adult fleas and controls flea infestations, and treats and controls intestinal worms. The two active ingredients in Advantage Multi are imidacloprid and moxidectin. Imidacloprid has a high affinity for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the post-synaptic region of the nervous system of fleas. The ensuing inhibition of cholinergic transmission in insects (i.e., fleas) results in paralysis and death. Moxidectin interacts with gaba-amniobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate-gated chloride channels. This leads to opening of the chloride channels on the post-synaptic junction, the inflow of chloride ions and induction of an irreversible resting state. The result is flaccid paralysis of susceptible parasites, followed by their death and/or expulsion.

On the Advocate Web site it says:
NEW Advocate® for Dogs kills fleas, prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm and controls mange and lice with monthly topical application.
FLEAS: Advocate treats and prevents fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.). The incidence of Flea Allergy Dermatitis is reduced and larval flea stages in the surroundings of Advocate-treated pets are killed.
HEARTWORM: Advocate prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis infection)
WORMS: Advocate controls roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina including larval (L4) and immature adult stages; hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Uncineria stenocephala, including larval (L4)and immature adult stages of all species; whipworm (Trichuris vulpis
LICE: Controls lice (Trichodectes canis, Linognathus setosus) for up to 6 weeks
MANGE: Treats and controls mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in dogs and puppies
Active Ingredients: 100 g/L IMIDACLOPRID, 25 g/L MOXIDECTIN
Administration: Part hair and apply to skin between the shoulder blades. For dogs over 25kg apply in divided doses between the shoulder blades on the back between the hips and one point in between. One application lasts for a month. Safe to use on puppies from 7 weeks of age.

I use Advantage Multi on Guen, I worked for a vet at the time I got it is great they tested the heartworms very expensively. It is very good with fleas I haven't seen one since a couple of weeks after using it except one or two here and there. But now I'm completly flea free. I got it from one of the reps of the company themselves, and got to see all the satistics about the test, it is very safe and very good. It is one of the only that won't come off even when using astripping shampoo, unless used daily. I would highly recommend it to every one, you can even use it with front line to control ticks as long as you apply each two weeks apart.

Do you have the name of one of the sites you can get it from?? Would prob save me some money.

I'm glad to hear positive feed back. I got a free sample and will put it on her tonight. I saw it on www.petcarechoice.com I have noticed that the canadian pet pharmacies do not need prescriptions for this type of Med that the US requires. Vets are always pushing what they have in the office so I like the fact you order what you want without prescription

The one thing that would concern me is the fact that it doesn't come off with a stripping shampoo. What if your dog DID have a reaction, and you couldn't get it off?

If your dog had a reaction that is a very very small chance they made it even safe to use on collies and breeds that are used to having reactions to most other topical flea meds even using 4X the amount required they didn't have but a few reactions during the test, it is very safe. The stripping shampoo they used was the type of cleansing shampoo you could buy at Petsmart not the groomers. So if it was a real reaction the vet would be able to take care of you, since they would need to any way. The reason they require a prescription is because of the heartworm medications in it, they want to make sure that you get tested for them before using it. But glad I could be of help, we had to be fully educated about the product before we could speak to people about it That is how I know this small information.

So how does it control heartworms? By killing the mosquitos before they bite or what?

Okay it works in two ways by not just killing but repiling the mosquitos but also killing any intruders that get inside the dogs body, since it is a topical treatment the meds are soaked into the skin and stright into the blood stream.
Here is a link that tells more about the safty and the testing done, http://advantagemulti.petparents.com/pdfs/Advantage_Multi_Dog.pdf .
