I am having a dog food issue in my house.  I have a 10 year old lab that is on low cal senior food and a puppy that is on Hills puppy food.  The puppy sneaks into the sr food bowl and the lab sneaks into the puppy food.  So this 2 different type dog foods thing is a pain.  Today I went to the Paws for a Cause expo and they handed me a sample of Canidae... I read the package and it says it's good for all dog stages (puppy-senior).  So I'm wondering if any of you have ever used this for a puppy as well as an adult dog with no problems.

thanks! - - Lynne

The reason why some adult dog foods are not good for puppies is because some have a very high protein level, which is believed to be bad for a puppy.
It is a pretty high quality dog food and should be ok for a dog that's any age. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard from a lot of people on here that it's a good dog food.

We just started using Canidae about 2 months ago. Amos is 1 year old, Smoosh is 6 years old. The best thing I've noticed about the food is that Amos isn't Farting much at all or if he is farting, it don't smell as bad. Now, whether you consider that a good reason or just a positive side effect. I don't know. lol

I just asked a similar question about Natural Balance a couple days ago. Shiloh our lab mix keeps sneaking Lucy's food so we are putting them both on the NB food.

I feed Canidae All life stages.  My pups are 1.5 years, 1 year 1month, and 7months.  They all love it.  Every now and then I will alternate with the Lamb and Rice formula though.  I switched to Canidae last year when all the pet food recalls were going on.  My pups have all done really well on the Canidae.  Their coats stay so shiny.

I haven't had a puppy, but I used to feed my 12 yr old lab, my 4 yr old shepherd mix, and my 4 yr old rattie all Canidae. They all loved it and did well on it. I liked it because I could feed all three of them the same food. I only switched because the shepherd was presribed a food by the vet and I have since then put her and the lab on Natural Balance Duck and Potato. It is still All Life Stages and I love that! Rowdy has a seperate food just because he was doing really well with the higher protein of Orijen. However, it costs a bit more, so I don't want to have to buy it for the big dogs.... My budget can only stretch so far.

I'm not a big fan of Hills- they use a lot of corn and fillers and chemicals in their foods. The more natural foods with better or no grains are a better option. Canidae's a great choice!

Canidae should be fine for both dogs.  Personally, I would add eggs or lean meat to up the protein a little bit.  The knock on feeding high protein to puppies is aimed at the giant and large breeds.  Supposedly,  high protein makes them grow too fast and they can suffer from bone and joint problems.  I would make sure to compare the calories per cup on each food, and adjust their portions accordingly to avoid weight gain.

I feed it to my 11 year old Lab, my 6 year old Old English, my 2 year old Rattie, and my 1 1/2 year old Rattie. They seem to be doing wonderful on it! I do give a little yogurt, fish oil, Welactin, vitamin E, some kelp and bone meal.

Can you please explain the benefits of these supplements to me.  I grew up with my parents only ever giving the dogs dog food and those bad table scraps.  My poor lab has gone 10 years on dog food only, so I'm hoping by educating myself with the new puppy, I can help the old girl get a few more good years.

we have been feeding canidae since the recall when my bullmastiff mix was 7 months old,I did not get peanut till he was 11 months old, canidae works great, I also give them boiled chicken breast mixed with a few veggies every morning, and in the evening they eat canidae,Before the recall I fed nutro pouches, but after the 3000.00 in vet bills i will stay away from that

MY Tobey got where he would not eat Candie.  Changed to Naural Balance.  He does some better.  He is just a finkie eater.  I think I will try the Salmon falvor when I get another Bag. He seems to tire of the favor.  He likes People salmon Juice on his food.  Anybody else have this problem?

I switched to Canidae when we adopted Holly 4 years ago. She was 14 wks, and Lucy was 2 1/2,  so they could both eat the same food. They have both done great on Canidae. I also cook assorted "real" foods for them in the crockpot, and then freeze in small portions to add to the top of their kibble at dinner. I heat up the food and mix with a couple tbsp. of plain non-fat yogurt to make a gravy... they love it... and never complain about my cooking!

You are the 2nd person in 2 days who I've heard talk about cooking for their pets.  How do you know what to cook and how much to give the dogs?  I'm really considering doing this and then gradually getting rid of commercial dog food in my pets diet.

I haven't tried Canidae but I tried Nature's Variety. Its good for all life-stages but I didn't like it with Remington. He was hungry all the time and the pieces were too small for him. But in your case it would probably work with a small breed puppy.
