I've been reading that some pet food brands use euthanized pets in their food! I probably shouldn't be surprised; I mean, beef companies have been rendering unused cow parts and feeding them to other cows, but...but...in our PET food?! It's used in some brands that list their meat ingredients as just "meat" and "animal". They get them from shelters that are having trouble getting rid of the bodies of the thousands of pets being euthanized every year. It's not a common practice, but still...
Does anyone know if this might be just a rumor? I hope it is...there's something inside me that is just screaming "now way!" dispite the articles I have read on the subject. It sounds like something from that movie "Soylent Green". There is almost nothing lower. Just disgusting.
Here's an artical I found on the subject:

This has been at the bottom of my mind for almost 10 years now. I googled it and then did my research on what good things you can feed your pets. I believe what you saying to be true. Pet food companies purchase old unused meats for use in pet foods once they are deemed unsuitable for human consumption. Many times carocene is poured over them to make sure they are not given to humans. I even heard that they do purchase euthanized pets for food. And you think its chicken and rice or beef. Don't be fooled they just call it whatever they want. Its all the same. You do your own research. I am very careful about what goes into my babies tummies. My Jimmy was a very sick and allergic pup. I really believe because I gave him the popular brand foods that are really nothing more than garbage. I just did not know any better. |

Check out www.dogfoodproject.com and go to Ingredients to Avoid. Check Animal Digest, Animal Fat and Meat and Bone Meal. Learn what ingredients to avoid.....these are in the cheap, nasty foods. The key here is to educate ourselves on the ingredients in the food we feed.

Meat & Bone Meal
|
AAFCO: The rendered product from mammal tissues, with or without bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices.
The animal parts used can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters and so on. It can also include pus, cancerous tissue, and decomposed (spoiled) tissue.

That is disguisting. But, it is also disguisting that in some countries they eat dogs. They sell them at the marketplace. |

The worst part of the euthanized (other than the thought) is the drugs in the bodies that then get introduced into the kibble. The very drug used to put the animal down.!!! (Of course, it's said , our drinking water is just as bad ...!!) I'm even suspicious of the "Mom & Pop All Natural" foods that are out there...even though they claim no weird animal by products, that they are "organic", or whatever, there are NO REGULATIONS or INSPECTIONS to confirm any of their claims. Just have to hope they are being honest....or, like a few on here, cook your own. I NEVER bought baby food for my kids...made my own. Seems dogs would be easier... No reason why I couldn't give Yogi what I eat...as long as I threw in a little more meat and bones/marrow? I think you can buy ground bone supplement also.... After having 2 sickly Labs, and now mom to a great little dog, it seems like a good idea to just cook extra for him. He's not that crazy about ANY of the kibble I have been buying for him...Taste of the Wild, NB Duck/Salmon, Canadai,etc...turns up his nose. There are lots of books on cooking for your pets and web sites... Google Dog Food cooking...mucho ideas! Pretty interesting stuff. dog food cooking Amazon Books: Bone Appetit: Gourmet Cooking for Your Dog - by Suzan Anson - 220 pages Home Prepared Dog and Cat Diets: The Healthful ... - by Donald R Strombeck - 378 pages http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9307862 |

Not only do they used euthanized pets to add to dog food, they use sick and diseased dead animals. It's disgusting. I did a lot of research on this subject about 6 years ago when my first Rattie, Bandit, died from cancer. It's why I am VERY particular about what I feed my babies now... |

THAT is what we have in common Suz. I lost Jimmy to cancer. We started taking him to a holistic vet but we still lost him. We cooked him chicken and rice for the last two years of his life. No more kibbles and bits, cesar or pupperoni. Gee that stuff is so bad. No wonder Jimmy was a poor eater. His food was crap. |

I know Dawnie, I was so ignorant back then. One of the treats I gave my Bandit was from Hills Science Diet, and it had that ethoxyquin in it, a known carcinogen used as a preservative. Here I thougth cuz the vet I used at the time sold it, it was good. So much for that! I was appalled by what I found during my research.
I still feed kibble, but it's on the advise of my holistic vet and what she perceives as good kibble. It's more expensive but so totally worth it. With 6 dogs, it'd be even more expensive to try to home cook for all - but I did for my old girl, Sasha, and I will for ANY of my babies should they ever have health issues that they would benefit from home cooking.
I miss my little Frito Bandito, but it was his death that led me to Ratbone. I got him from a local rescue here near Albany, NY and he's the reason why I foster - so that I could help save dogs like him, who suffered horrible abuse and neglect. I didn't want his death to be in vain.

I would like to thank EMG for starting this thread. I had read the other threads about dog foods but still never did any research other than reading the ingredieants list on the bag of Hills Science Diet that we feed Yaz. Seemed okay to me and she wasn't having any issues so we kept feeding it to her. After I read this last night I did extensive online research. Today we bought a bag of Solid Gold for small breeds and started mixing a little in with the Hills to transition her off of it. The difference in ingtredients was amazing. So EMG Yaz and I thank you. |
