I have a gian rat terrier he is 30 pounds and stocky. He is getting old and is having joint problems so I want to slim him don a little. I used to run with him but because hes getting older and his joints are getting bad I dont know what to do. I don't want to starve him by giving him less food. What do I do? He is very fussy about what he eats and he will get mad at me if I change his food and he will do something bad to me. What do I do?

What are you feeding him right now? How much does he need to lose? There are some great reduced fat/calorie foods out there...one I used on my dobie mix was Innova reduced fat. He did pretty good on it, and lost a few pounds. Even my picky eater, Molly, loved it.

How much food does he gat a day? You can decrease the amount of food he is getting but still add things like green beans and other veggies so he feels as if he is getting more. You cut the calories but still fill him up. If he is picky a low cal food is probably not going to go across well.

Your vet can help you determine how much overweight your dog is... and how much he needs to lose. Good suggestion about the green beans and other veggies which are low cal and low on sugar!
