Joleigh growled and snapped at me a little while ago, she was just laying in my lap as i was playing on the computer and i was petting her and i started petting her legs and she growled at me... i left her alone for a bit but when i went to get up and had to move her, she growled again... she wasn't being mean, but i thought that she might have been hurt... so i let her walk around and she didnt limp, just wanted to get back in my lap... i started looking at her leg and when i touched a certain spot she turned around and snapped at me.. shes not limping on it or anything, is it jsut a sore muscle or something???

Hmmmm....weird. Maybe she just doesn't like having her legs touched?

Terriers are notorious for growling when they don't wish to be bothered. It's something I've had to work on with Bailey even as good natured as he is. For a period of time... if he would be laying on the bed... or in his bed in the office... and I touched him or attempted to pick him up... or in any way disturbed him... he would growl. He simply at that time did not want me to bother him.

That is NOT acceptable behavior in my world. We worked through it and he no longer does it. If I know that he is not hurt or sick... and I'm relatively certain he's reacting this way because he wants to be left alone (which is perfectly natural behavior for a dog by the way...) then the behavior needs to be corrected.

Off my lap she would go if nothing was obviously hurting her. Jack used to do this with the boys when he was sleeping on the couch. I emphasize used to. Off the couch he went, and everything else he deemed was "his". He worked for everything he got, whether it was a simple sit before he got his food or other commands done for other privlidges. He was only allowed on the couch (or lap) when invited, and only after he proved for some time that the possesiveness was gone. He has yet to have acted that way again in months.
