Mary - I've gotten the Red Barn sticks before (I think this is the brand that Petco carries) and they did smell worse than these new ones I got but they didn't stink up the whole house! And they smelled like cow urine (duh...) not rotting animals. Maybe you got a batch that had gone "bad"?

I noticed that Red Barn sticks come in plastic bags and these that I just got come in a box....supposedly if these bully sticks are kept in plastic too long the moisture can cause them to mold.

Just what I've read on a couple of websites....might not be true but just worth noting.

I finally bought some bully sticks, my 10 year old lab loved them... it was her first time with them.. so she's in penis heaven.  But I have a guestion, they both ate them relatively fast, and by fast I mean within less than 1/2 hour.  Is that normal?  Should they have lasted longer like a rawhide would?  I know labs are wicked chewers, so that was a no brainer that KC would be done with hers quick.  Did I get a crappy batch?  Or is it possible that Brutus was rushing to keep up with KC?

Lyneee - how long were the sticks? When I give mine the 6" sticks it takes them a good hour to chew them down and then they still have some left. I can see where a bigger dog would finish one quicker though.

The good thing about bully sticks is that it doesn't matter if they chew them faster as they won't cause any blockages in the intestines like rawhide can....of course you still have to watch them to be sure they don't choke when the sticks get so small they can get the whole thing in their mouth.

Maybe try the 12" sticks for them? LOL

There are two brands I've come across which are pretty much oder-free. One is marketed under the brand "Moos" and the other is "Endless Sky". I buy the 36" Moos and cut them down...much cheaper this way. Tried Red Barn once and thought something crawled under my couch and died because they smelled so bad!

These were kind of small, I would say the one I gave KC was about 5" and the one I gave Brutus was maybe 3".  I didn't get anything too big for the first time just in case they didn't like them.

ok, so I gave Brutus his 2nd bully stick ever... he chewed it for a little while, then he took off through the house with it.  I followed him only to find him pretend to be burying the thing in a pile of dirty laundry.  His nose was pushing imaginary dirt over the thing.  I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to wet myself!!

*snort* It's funny how you learn something new every day...I cracked up when I found out what they were made of!

Just one question...why are bully sticks so great? Is it just that they are all natural and last a long time, or is it just some kind of joke. (lol) I saw a few at a local pet store...that had sizes from 6 inches to up to a yard...A guy came in with his greater swiss mountain dog and bought one of the huge ones, and the dog whent nuts and kept trying to take it from him while the guy was paying for it.

They're great because, unlike rawhides, they aren't processed with any chemicals and don't cause blockages in the intestines.  (And yes, I realize this doesn't always happen with rawhides but it can happen and some of us just don't want to take that chance.)  The bully sticks are easy to digest, a 6" sticks lasts about an hour for my little dogs, cleans their teeth quite well and they love them.

They DO cost more than rawhides....supply and demand....as you can imagine they are only so many cattle penises out there!
