Hi, I just adopted(today) a 5yr old female Rat Terrier.  She was completely an outside doggie , left tied outside on a short leash.  Well, I brought her home and bathed her-she was obviously filthy and noticed she has a rash on her feet and her legs and neck also look irritated as well.  My vet is already closed, so I was hoping someone could give me some advice til I can get her seen.  It doesn't seem to bother her, but her poor feet look like eczema(sp?).  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Amy

Poor baby. Welcome to the site. My first guess...not sure where you are located but in cold climates a lot of people use stuff to melt the ice and it is very harmful to dogs.

Could be a lot of things, probably will be a good idea to see the vet as soon as you can, but likely waiting one or two days. Could also be a type of mange. I've never had a dog with any kind of mange, but others here have and would be able to tell you more. She probably will benefit from being inside and on a better diet (doubtful she was fed one at her old home).

Bless you for adopting her. We want to see some pics!!!! Is her name, Nikky?

Nikksymom: I looked up another post (originally by Paul) for a solution recommended for itching/rash/mange that many on here say works very, very well.

Items:

16 oz Bottle Hydrogen peroxide
32 oz (4 cups or the bottle filled twice) water
3-4 Tablespoons Borax (in the laundry section)
Bucket
Sponge and/or Spray bottle (optional)

Pour all into the bucket and mix. It should be a milky color with some grains at the bottom.
Give your pup a bath with baby shampoo (only baby shampoo since it's hypoallergenic)
Towel Dry, and while still damp spray or sponge all over the body.
Leave it to dry DO NOT RINSE or DRY off (and don't let him get allover ther place
Keep this up for at least a week. You'll have a relieved and itch free baby.

Ahhh. Poor little thing.

Bless you for getting her out of what sounds like a horrible situation.

Our vet has recommended via phone one 25mg Benedryl for isolated allergic reactions for both Sami and Bob at various times. Sami is 13lbs and Bob was 17lbs. He is familiar with both of them and their health, however.

A benedryl is probably fine, but if the rash isn't bothering her too much you might just want to wait till tomorrow and see what your vet says.

Good luck with her and keep us posted!

Welcome and thank you for rescuing the poor baby. With the conditions she came from I am not surprised she has some skin/health issues. I wouldn't personally give anything unless you talk to the vet. It could be a result of the filth she was living in and no bathing alone and not be anything more than that. I am sure with a little love and care she will get better. if you feel she needs something right away, then I would try to get her into the vet sooner before trying to medicate her yourself. Good luck, keep us posted and we would love pics!!!

Welcome to the site. I agree that getting her to your vet the first appointment available would be the best thing. So many things could be going on with a newly adopted dog that was in these conditions. An adopted dog should always be evaluated by a vet to see if eyes, ears, teeth & general health are good. We know so little about what our rescues have been living in, living with, or living without, as the case may be.
