Today the vet switched our dogs to Royal Canin. I don't think I have ever heard of it. The vet sait it is the only "pure" food he can find that does not contain any beef. Apparently some dogs are allergic? I dunno. But I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this food. It's the duck and potato (IVD). Anyone feed this? |

| I've heard of Royal Canin. Your's must be the veterinary diet. Natural Balance has a Duck and Potatoe food and it might be cheaper than royal canin. |

| First off... dogs can be allergic to other dogs. A RAST test request is the best option for anyone who is concerned about their dog and allergies. We primarily recommend Hills and Annova. But it doesn't mean it's not good food. I would recommend requesting a RAST test. It tells you everything your dog is allergic to. all the way down to fruits and veggies. Then a food can be recommended. |

| I know a vet used to order it for clients with same allergy issues. It's supposed to be a good one. My lab just got put on Hill's Ultra allergen diet but I think it might be the chicken she's allergic to. |

| My Reni started out on it. It is very expensive. she had the 27 an 36 for small breed puppies. She got tired of it pretty quick. I am feeding them Dick Van Patton's Natural Balance for puppies and adults. The first bag I bought had two big moldy pieces in it. I called the comapny and gave them the numbers and exp date off it, and took it back to the store. They sent me a voucher for a free 5 lb bag. I checked the second bag before I left the store. So far ok. They said that was a rare thing. The manager at Petco took all the bags with that date code off the shelves. |

My vet prescribed a Hill's Ultra Hypoallergenic diet for Schatzi, but did offer to prescibe Royal Canin hypoallergenic diet instead if I wanted. I prefer Royal Canin over Hill's, but it was more expensive. I don't know if it's the same as what your vet is talking about. This one was by presciption only. Either way, since the original prescription, I've ease Schatzi over onto the NB Duck and Potato. I believe it's a healthier food and the Ultra Hypoallergenic food didn't seem to really be making a difference for Schatzi's condition. Does Corona have allergies? Is it beef that is causing the allergies? Because there are several other options that would avoid beef and perhaps be a little better nutrition that... Personally, I'm not really a fan of Royal Canin or Hill's, however, the Royal Canin is a bit better. I like Natural Balance and several other companies offer allergy food that use single source carb and proteins, as well as less common proteins such as fish, venison, and duck. However, I've also been told that if your dog doesn't have allergies, you don't need to feed it an allergy product. That way, if allergies are developed in the future, you will have more of a selection of foods to deal with it. |

| If you truley think it is beef and/or chicken i personally would go with NB Duck and Potato or I also believe Wellness carries a allegry liine. Hill's is basically junk full of fillers and by-products and Royal Canin, while not as bad, is still more expensive. Their 2nd ingredient and first meat listed in duck by-product meal....Ewwwww. |

Were your dogs having problems? If not I certainly wouldn't let the vet decide what I should feed my dog....I agree with the others on Hill's and Royal Canin not being the best foods. There are many high quality foods out there. My Mayfly has allergies and does well on Natural Balance Duck and Potato.

| I just bought TOBEY Natures Choice yesterday at PETCO. I did not buy the allergy food yet. He di lap it up when I fed him. He got me at at 3:00 in the morning. He had to go to the bathroom. He was a little loose. Figured it was change of food. Talked to the manager. He was very knowledgeable on the food which helped. They do carry Royal Cain too. It is very expenseive tho. |

Thanks everyone... its not Corona, its my moms dog. And the vet insisted that this Royal Canin was the only food that contained no sorce of beef what so ever. (that he could find) But because we all live together its easiest to buy the bigger bags and share between the dogs. And I just want Corona (as well as my moms dogs) to have a better quality food. The vet is not 100% if its beef yet, but buster was SO VERY BADLY covered in those bumps that for some reason thats what the vet thought it may be. The vet said he has NEVER seen anything like this. They did do some test where they cut him open and removes a plug/core and the results should be in pretty soon(I think lol) |

| There are many foods that contain no beef....ingredients are listed on the label....something doesn't sound right here. Regardless, if he thinks it is beef you have many other choices besides Royal Canin....I would choose one of the higher quality foods with not much grain in it. JMO |

I personally feed wellness Duck and brown rice, as I have found it to be the best personal choice for CoCo. We tried the Royal Canin, but CoCo's fur seemed to lose its shine and she wasn't very happy with it. This Welnees she loves and I do as well because it only has five ingredients, no other fillers and stuff. |

I would tend to agree with Mary Beth. There are several other companies out there that offer allergy formulas, and most of them don't have beef either. However, there is a good chance your vet may not be knowledgeable on the various foods out there. He may only be familiar with the brands they carry and the Royal Canin may be the only one of his that has no beef... I didn't think that that many brands put beef in their foods, actually. Just out of curiosity, I checked out Rowdy's food, too. Sam and Schatzi are on the NB Duck and Potato, so I know there is no beef in there. Rowdy is currently on Orijen's 6 Fresh Fish. It's only protein source is fish. He was previously on Orijen Adult and looing at the ingredients on that, it looks like the protein souces were chicken, turkey, fish and eggs. Could you research and then ask your vet about a few other brands? Weren't you previously feeding Merrick or something like that? Do they have an allergy option? |

| Yes we were feeding merrick. And I have started to do some research and this vet obvioulsy isnt well informed on this as he came off. Once the results come back on the tests they did I will probably switch back to Merrick considering we have a huge back left still. Thanks everyone... I just didnt know much about food, but I have been looking online, which I guess I should have done a while ago lol. |

I think most of us have been in the same or similar situation. Most vets aren't very informed as to all the nutrition choices available. The large, well-known brands sponser much of the food education for vet schools, so they are pretty much only familiar with the "biggies"- Science Diet, Nutro, Royal Canin, etc. I discuss food with my vet, but then I also have a pet nutritionist I discuss my options with, too. I've gotten in the habit of asking the vet all about the food she is prescribing- ingredients, purpose, what will it do, etc.., and then I talk to my nutritionist and do reserch. |
