Miles & Tilly went in today for their 2nd round of shots.(first time we've brought them) They each got 1 shot, a tube of Pyrantel Pamoate (for me to do @ home) and interceptor flavor tab for each of them. Now I know one is for deworming and the other is for heartworms. Never thought to as if I have to give these seperately?? Neither one had an issue with it. Did great. Miles kept trying to lick the vet. While Tilly was more reserved. Miles weighs 5.5 pounds and Tilly weighs 3.9 pounds.(he's gained a pound in 2 weeks. Is that normal? Right now they are both sleeping. When we got home Miles did both pottying outside. And tilly went on the paper inside.(need to work on that more)
The vet also gave us an Iams puppy pack with a sample bag of puppy food. Has anyone fed this? Right now we're feeding Purina Puppy Chow and they like it. What's the difference? Is one better than the other?? In all the vet visit was a little over $100 for both of them. They have to go back in 3 weeks. How often after that do they need to be seen for shots?? |

| Glad they both did well. I can't remember exactly, but I think after her third set of puppy shots, Daisy didn't go back until it was time to be spayed at 6 mos. and that was also the time she got her rabies shot which couldn't be given until that age. She is due back sometime this month for her yearly boosters of everything but rabies. When it's time for her rabies vac. this time it will be the 3 year version. |

| Apollo went for shots at 9, 12, and 15 weeks. He never had worms so don't know much about that. He weighed 4.2, 6.7, 8.5 lbs each of those three times he was taken. The last visit he also had his rabies shot. My pups eat Canidae because of all the recalls that have been going on and Canidae doesn't use any wheat or corn at all. After Apollo would have his shots he'd sleep most of the day. I've had Emma long enough to take her for one vet visit but she slept most of the day after her shots too! |

If I read it correctly(it's 28 pages), according to the new (2006) guidelines, puppies should get core vaccines (distemper, hepatitis and parvo), a minimum of three times between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks, 3-4 weeks apart. Then they should get the booster vax one year after the puppy series is complete. After the puppy shots and one year booster, the new recommendation is vaccinating every 3 years.
The rabies shot can be given as early as 3 months of age, with the 2nd shot one year later. Hopefully your area authorizes the three year rabies vaccine.
All others are considered non-core vaccines although they may be recommended depending on where you live.(lyme and leptospirosis, etc)

My vet didn't want me giving any heartworm or other worm meds on the same day as vaccines were given. I'm especially wary of putting all those chemicals in them now that I have Oscar, who is so tiny at 7 pounds.
As far as the food goes, if I had to choose between the Purina Puppy and the Iams, I'd feed the Iams. I'm no fan of Iams either but it looks better than Purina. Personally, I just feel so much better feeding a higher quality food that, like Jolene said, doesn't contain wheat or corn or any grain fractions at all for that matter. Also, I prefer an "all life stages" food that's suitable for adults and puppies.
