My little Toby battled Fleas last summer and we had a hard time keeping them away.  We used Frontline Plus evey month and gave him flea baths often as we could and as prescribed in the shampoo.  Has anyone else had any success with other methods. We have found 2 fleas on him already this spring...arghhhhh...to me it is tooo early but they are out after our thaw out and nice weather of late.

But please pass on your suggestions because we want to try and keep him as flea free as possible. We do also spray the house every month for fleas in the house. I don't get bit and nether does my husband. So I think he is bringing them from outside but we could any suggestions for all of you...Thanks in advance for your help....

I spray my yard with bug killer regularly. I hate doing it, but since moving to the city I actually found I had more fleas than when I lived in the country. I also put Borox soap into my carpets all through my house. You leave it for a couple of days, and then vacuum it up. The powder that remains in your carpet acts as a dessicant and kills any flea eggs in your carpet.

I haven't had a flea problem since.

I used to use Frontline Plus but the fleas in my area (I do live in a swamp!) became immune to it. I switched to Advantage but before I switched I would put the Frontline on and the fleas would simply laugh at it. Luckily, I haven't had to use any flea meds since November (so glad because it gives the dogs a break from having that stuff put on them!).

Lazerquest - how do you give them garlic? I mean is chopped, fresh garlic or garlic powder or what?

we put powdered garlic on their food, they like it so it is not a problem with them eating their food. The other thing is that you will find some dogs in the house get no fleas while another one gets a ton (tastier I imagine). I also you tea tree oil in their shampoo and that seems to help keep them away, also relieves any itchy spots

Thanks. I'm using tea tree oil shampoo now on Mayfly for her itchies (no fleas yet though this year).
Mayfly's allergic to fleas so if even one gets on her and bites she itches like crazy....I think I'm going to get some garlic powder and sprinkle on their food each evening.

my old rottie girl is allergic also. I ended up having to put a mild cortisone on her hot spots from when she would get bit by a flea (mostly on her tummy, she would get hives). You can't stop them from getting bit, but you can at least stop them from staying on them

The only thing is that you have to make sure the dogs don't get into the soap and that you vacum really good it is the vibartions of the vacum that wakes up the dormant larva stage and makes it to where you can kill them.

When I brought Rattagan home at 8 weeks old he was so little it looked like he had a flea blanket on. He didn't really, but I wanted rid of the fleas and didn't want to put chemical shampoos on him at that age. Instead I sat down with a small bowl of alcohol and held him and each time I saw the flea I would dip my finger in the alcohol and touch the flea. It knocks them out for a minute and then I picked it off and dropped it in a small bottle with alcohol in it and there the little buggers died. I use Sentinel flavor tabs once a month, as well as flea baths but I have a new trick with Ratty. I also use the Hartz flea and tick sparay but he doesn't like it to be sprayed on him. So after his bath, while he is still wet I pour that in my hands and rub it on him. The fleas here in Miami don't like it I'll tell ya, plus it kills fleas and ticks as well as prevents flea eggs. I keep a small bottle of alcohol handy if they seem to suddenly have a flea or two and get rid of them then and there. I haven't had to do that in a long time but physical removal is one sure way to get them off and know that they are dead.

for my rotties it would be about a teaspoon for the ratties it is about a 1/4 maybe less depending on the size of the rat (my biggest is about 18 lbs and the smallest is 7 lbs (she gets a little sprinkling)
