Sarah - has Petco started carrying Nature's Variety? I haven't seen it but I haven't looked for new foods there in a while.

The Petco by me has Nature's Variety, Natural Balance and Avoderm.  Their choices are getting better.  i still buy my food at Pet Supplies Plus though as they by far have the best prices.

I must say I'm surprised by all this.  Our rattie eats dry Nutro and does very well on it.  He's active, healthy and has a beautiful coat.  When we 1st got him we fed him Iams but it gave him terrible gas!   We have 3 cats, 9 & 10 years old and they've only ever eaten Nutro (canned & dry).  They're all big, healthy cats with soft shiny fur.  The 10 year old has eaten it since she was 5 weeks old, and has always been in perfect health.

If only there was a way to help the whole world understand what they are putting into most store dog food!!!! The Majority of people have no clue what they are actually feeding their dog.
Rule of thumb for everyone.. if your food can be found at Petco, Petsmart or the Grocery store its probably NOT good.
Even if you dog seems healthy - this poor quaility food will slowly destroy your little dogs body and give you some very expensive vet bills to deal with later in their life.

but then again.. most of us don't know much about Nutrition for us (the people
So why would we know how to feed our beloved pups?

Actually I'm pretty confident that I've researched what I feed my dogs a lot more than what I feed myself! LOL
Dog food comes in all levels of quality. Raw food may well be the best (I don't know for sure having never tried it) but it's not practical, feasible or desirable for some of us. It's cost prohibitive for me AND I have no desire to handle raw meat.

Now, I'm confident that at least 2 foods at Petco are quality foods - Natural Balance and Solid Gold. There are some mid-grade foods there, too....I call them mid grade only because they have a lot of grains (like oatmeal, barley, rice, etc. but not corn or wheat or soy) in them.

I think everyone makes the best decision they can on what to feed their dogs. And some pet stores (like Petco) seem to be adding more quality foods. There even some mid grade organic choices at Target now like Paul Newman's food and Nature's Recipe (I think...)...they aren't super good (again, a lot of grain) but they are organic and no corn, wheat or soy.

We went through similar things with Charlie when he was 4 months old before the recall had been issued. We were feeding him Nutro Max puppy. He started to get very weak and would hardly eat. We took him to the vet and they could find nothing wrong. A few more days go by and he is skin and bones! The only thing he would eat was plain chicken and rice which I believe is the reason he is still with us today. Finally I took him to a diffrent vet who thought he had gotten into some rat poisen which we knew was impossible after we had asked every house on the street if they used it. So the vet put him on a strict diet and I had to use a syringe to feed him the canned food since he was so weak. I also had to do this with water. It didnt occur to me that it could be the food untill the recall started. I spent over $500 in vet bills because of this company. I will never ever buy anything of thiers ever again. Luckily we caught it in time and now he is a healthy 1 1/2 year old!
