She hasn't been eating, which is pretty normal. She is soooo picky. Anyway, on Sunday I went to the grocery store late at night and picked up some canned food because she isn't eating...I normally get her canned food from the expensive pet store, but I've been a bad mommy lately. Anyway, I am afraid of canned food after all of the recalls, so I got something called Brandon Farms Naturals-95%chicken. I thought it sounded OK from the label. She ate that on Sunday night...still not eating her kibble. Then on Monday, she wouldn't eat...but puked up some of my daughter's underwear. Then yesterday, she wouldn't eat and had bad diarrea. She may have stolen a chicken bone from my youngest daughter's dinner plate, but there was no evidence. The bone just disappeard and so I assumed Tinkerbelle jumped up and got it while I was clearing the table. Then late last night, she is digging a hole in the woods and wouldn't come for anything. My husband thinks she found some moles. I managed to get her in by shaking the Milkbone box, but she still won't eat one. So...at 4:30am she starts puking white foam. Then later she is trying to poop and only a little liquid is coming out and she is squealing like it hurts her.
I took her to the vet. X-rays showed no obstruction or foreign objects. He gave her meds for diarrea and vomitting plus an antibiotic. He told me to feed her some rice and chicken...I did and she ate those....she is refusing to take the pills and I can't really disguise them...she picked them out of the chicken. Any advice on getting her to take these pills? Are moles poisonous? Any advice on anything? I'm just very worried and although I'm relieved that her X ray looked OK, she is still not acting right.
Sorry, I've been gone a couple of weeks because life is getting in the way and our computer crashed, but my hubby got it up running again. I hate to only come on when I need help....but help, please!

Glad there's no obstruction, apparently the vet thinks it's something she ate though? Moles aren't poisonous as far as I know....many terriers go after them and kill them. However, maybe the mole itself was sick with something? Or maybe she's just not used to "moles"? Has she held down the rice and chicken? As far as getting the pill in her, they make "pill poppers" you can get from your vet...you put it in their mouth and it shoots the pill down her throat. I just open my dogs mouth with one hand and place the pill really far back in the throat and they have to swallow it...I don't use the pill popper....if you do this she won't like it but just do it anyway! Maybe give her a little plain yogurt or canned pumpkin as both a treat and treatment for the diarhea/nausea. |

I'm sorry Tinkerbelle isn't feeling well. Moles aren't poisonous...unless someone has tried to get rid of them with poisons. No way to really know, anyone of your neighbors could have put that stuff out. I don't try to hide the pills in anything...my dogs always find them and spit them out. I've been having to give Molly antibiotics the last few weeks and she is really good about letting me get them in her mouth...just at the back of the tongue, as far back as I dare put it, and I hold her mouth shut until I feel her swallow. I've done this with several other dogs and it always works. I hope she feels better soon...don't feel bad about coming here when you need help. That's what we're here for. |

| Ratty used to do that too, after trips to the vet and meds like your vet gave you, we found he was digging up grub worms and eating them. They made him puke up foam and have bad runs. I actually had to train him not to dig so he would stop eating the grub worms. He didn't eat the moles or rabbits just killed them. I have had no problems with things like that since he stopped digging. I hope all Tinkerbelle did was eat a grub worm. Please let us know how everything goes. I hope she feels better soon. |

I agree with Lisabeth about the pills. Some animals just won't take pills any other way other than putting it way in the back and holding their mouth shut until they have to swallow. I'm glad at least she doesn't have an obstruction. I noticed when we used to have moles (the cats killed them all) that they would kill the moles, but they would not eat them. Someone told me it's because it will make them sick. Not poisonous really, just "disagrees" with them, I guess. I can't say for certain, but my cats do not eat them, whereas they eat (at least partially) other things they kill - mice and birds. I also read, that while not big enough to be an obstruction, that mole claws do not digest and can cause discomfort when being eliminated later As long as the vet feels there isn't anything overly serious going on, I'd follow his advice. I hope she's feeling back to normal soon! |

Ew. Not surprised moles can disagree with them. Everyone I've talked to whose dog catches moles (co-worker with JRT and friend with JRT/chi cross) says they just catch and kill them quickly...don't eat them.

Not sweet, beautiful little Tinkerbelle! I've never experienced what she is going through.
But for the pills I put them a small hunk of cheese and they eat it so fast they have no idea they got a pill. I make it so they don't have to chew. That's my trick. Or if I have some grilled chicken around I will give them a small hunk with the pill inside.
Give Tinkerbelle a hug and kiss from me.

I'm so sorry that sweet little girl is sick, but am so glad she doesn't have an obstruction. The advice of giving pills is very good -- I would just add that, after putting it far back on the tongue and shutting her mouth, hold it closed, rub her throat and blow in her nostrils. This will make her swallow. Hope she feels better soon. |

I took all of your advice last night and I did finally get the pills down her, but she really struggled. I hated to gag her with the pill in the back of her throat since she had thrown up so much, but that is how it eventually worked.....since she isn't really eating well...she wasn't falling for any of the disguises.
So...update...she hardly slept last night, is licking her butt hole until it is raw, and crawls around hunched over and then cries and licks it again. She hasn't pooped and she has eaten 3 boiled chicken tenderloins in the past 24 hours, a little bit of rice and a tsp of yogurt...not really drinking either. She seems to be in pain when she tries to walk and she looks like she is constipated the way she is hunched over, but nothing is moving out. I had to go to my daughter's Easter party this morning as a room mom. I came home at 11am and couldn't find Tinkerbelle, she was hiding under my bed when I left. My hubby said she had come out to see him and get some loving and then went and hid under the couch. She wasn't under the couch when I got home, so I panicked. I did eventually find her under my mother's bed....mom never heard or saw her come in. Now, I have her in her crate with a little water and a little bowl of yogurt. I gave her the antibiotic, but not the diarrea and vomitting meds...since at this point...I think I'd like to see something pass out of this little baby.
What do you all think? |

| I'd call the vet....sounds like she's hurting. It wouldn't hurt to call him and tell him what's going on. Maybe he could recommend something for making her poop. If one of mine had eaten a chicken bone or a mole and was acting like that I'd be very nervous. JMO |

I called and he said since she hasn't thrown up again...I should just watch her for a little while. If she had an obstruciton, he thinks she would be vomitting and wouldn't even want the chicken. I gave her a little yogurt and have her in her bed in the crate. She is sleepy. I'm going to give her a couple of hours and then re-assess. If I bring her back to the vet, he'll do a barium x-ray over a couple of hours....It will be another $200, so I"m trying to not be a hypochondriac. I am worried sick |

How long has it been since she hasn't eaten normally? I'm surprised your vet hasn't done bloodwork to make sure her liver and kidneys are functioning OK - often liver/kidney disease causes dogs to stop eating. Please ask your vet about that. |

I don't think they did bloodwork. They took x-rays and fecal. There didn't appear to be an obstruction, but the stomach lining was swollen and irritated looking on the x-ray. He said it is normally paper thin and hers was very thick.
I don't think she needs a laxative....she had diarea just yesterday and I gave her something for that, so maybe that pill has her stopped up. I'm just worried because she can't seem to walk 2 steps without yelping out in pain and then squatting to lick her poop hole. She looks like a puppy with worms who scoots around on it's fanny. She is so miserable, I can't stand it. I'm going to wrap her up in the blankie and try to watch TV for an hour to see if she throws up....if she continues with this yelping, I know I will end up taking her back in. I can't stand to see her in pain. |
