the vet said it is like a virus that they get from lick and sniffing everything out side but it is in the feces of carriers and it causes them to dehydrate and they cannot absorb nutrients. within 3 days he was close to death. bloody stool vomiting. it was horrid i cryed. we went to our regular vet and he gave us antibiotics sent us home overnight it was so much worse so i called them back and they were out of town it was so bad i called 5 vets and finally got him in where we go now. he said if i had waited we would have lost him. all this in 3 days. it acts like parvo but it isnt.

Lucy had giardia when she was a pup too. Not that bad though. I think she got it from her puppy training class. Basically they can get it from contact with any sort of animal poo that is contaminated. People can get it as well.

Poor little one. The Peanut had severe Giardia, Coccidia, hook worms, tape worms and who knows what else (complete with bloody stools and vomiting etc). He was skin and bones when he got here. Much better now. Hope your pup is well soon.

How did your vet know it was giardia?  Supposedly it is very hard to detect.  I've read that if treated with antibiotics that it sometimes comes back.  Apparently the best way to treat it is with Panacur.

The giardia vaccine is usually not recommended, as it is minimally effective and can cause side effects. Generally, giardia is not life threatening, responds to treatment, and most dogs with it don't display the symptoms.  The symptoms are:

Intermittent loose stools (most dogs have this and it can happen to puppies).

       Will not gain weight

        Poor appetite

Some dogs will eat but keep losing weight

        Graze on grass excessively

         Gassy

I would highly recommend you start giving your little one probiotics.  He needs to replenish his good bacteria in his digestive tract after taking antibiotics or he will be more susceptible to digestive issues or yeast infections.

As Ski aleady commented, the Giardia vaccine isn't always effective. I gave it to one of my dogs once, but won't have them vaccinated against it any more. It won't neccessarily stop them from contacting giardia, and giardia, while it isn't fun, is normally fairly easy to treat. Recently Sam was having issues with some diarhea and the vet suggested she may have giardia, but they needed to test for it. The test was going to be pricey and, either way, she was going to prescribe the same treatment. I spared myself the test and just got the antibiotics. Sam is just fine now. (And Sam is the one who had the giardia vaccine- not that long ago...by the same vet. She even told me the vaccine wasn't always effective.)
I'd rather not over vaccinate, especially if it's a vaccine that may or may not work.

OMG!!! poor liil guy (and por you!)... is he doing better now?
puupues have weak immune systems,... not fully developed immunes... they can get anything rather eassily...
does he have all his shots? my vet told me there are basic vaccs in the shots... but ther are about 25 more that are not usually
given unless requested or neccessary! I could not imagine going through that! I am a tough "macho" guy but not with my lil guys!! !they are my children!!!
It would break me down!

My puppy is just getting over gairdia as well. Not as bad though. She was eating and drinking and very playful but has loose mucusy stool with a little blood. Took 2 fecal exames to find it. Giardia is a water born parasite. Comes from drinking contaminated water or coming in contact with another dog stool that have it. Once they have it, they will always have it. Antibiotics will treat it but they can have reacurring bouts if they are stressed or as they get old. Some dogs can be carriers with no symtoms. It is important that you disinfect their poop area because it can live several weeks in the cold. I lysoled the house, washed her bedding and gave her a good bath after treating her. She poops in the patio so I took a garden sprayer and mixed 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water and sprayed the patio. Let sit 10 minutes and rinse off with water. Lysol and bleach kill this parasite. I did a lot of research on this. The vet gave her a 5 day course of Metro aintibiotic but I have read it is only 60% effective. She seems fine now but I have read that panacur(which you can by over the counter as a dewormer works really well) you are suppose to give them the treatment as prescribe on the box then wait 10 days. Divide the regular dose into 10 day dosage and readminister it over 10 days to kill the entire cycle. If Dora gets another bout, I will try this method. Also very important to give them probiotics. I just use some yogurt in the morning and evening to help put good bacteria in the system. Does wonders. Hope the little one gets better soon!

The vet did a few tests and a fecal test and thats how we knew what Amos had. Yesterday we went for our check up and he is 110% doc said he can recovered with no lasting effects and went ahead with his vaccinations. Im happy to say Amos is back and so full of energy he is keeping me from my housework. We have also bonded even more than before my hubby even noticed that I am not allowed to be out of his site for more than a minute. Im happy happy. He has gained a pound in 2 weeks.

Our 6 year old rat terrier Nikki has had diarrhea for about 24 hours.  At first a lot came out.  Now it is only in very small amounts, but very smelly, watery, and bright yellow.  She has also vomited a few times but not recently.  The emergency vet technician suggested we wait until tomorrow and take her into our regular vet, unless she was not able to hold down water or is very lethargic.  She is resting quietly now but appears to be doing alright, so we will wait until tomorrow to take her in.

A week ago we started changing her diet from Kirkland Lamb and Rice to Kirkland Chicken and RIce, mixing half of each.  I'm wondering if the could be causing the problem.  Has anyone else made this shift from one type food to another, especially the Kirkland products? -- Robert (aka mgguy).

My daughter had gairdia when she was 6 and lost 10 pounds. she got very sick beforte they found out what it was. Then we got a call from the health dept. They said she got it from the local pool. Our Lucy had it as a pup also. Just some bloody diarrhea. She didn't get to sick thank goodness. Glad everything is back to "normal"

Sorry it took me so long to get back, I have been out of town.

Dogs can get it at any age. Lucy got it when she was under 5 months old. I am thinking it was from her puppy class because that is where she had most contact with several dogs and was held at a barn. But it's hard to tell. They can get it from so many things. People can get it too. My mom actually got it when she was out of the country hiking.

Out here they call it Beaver Fever and it is very common. Beavers are a carrier and they like to travel, you wouldn't think so, but they will walk through the woods for miles and miles with no streams to go in. But when they are in the water you can pretty well expect that giardia is in the water too. People around here are pretty knowledgeable about it and warned me when I first moved to the area. I did not know that dogs could get it too! My dogs will drink from any stream when we are hiking or walking.
