I want to thank all of you for the wealth of information shared daily here.  If it were not for the info on this web site I may have waited to take action.  I had a vet appointment set up for this Friday but last night Koda started showing sings that something was wrong.  She had a bit of diarrhea but the breeder said it was from the deworming.  A little bit of blood began to show up in her stools so I stopped the outdoor housebraking and went to the puppy pads to keep an eye on things.  Late last night she began to throw up.  Thanks to this site I knew that bloody stools and throwing up in a puppy is a red flag. Koda is now on a bland diet, meds and to her and Panda's disapointment limited activity.

Thank you all.

So glad you caught that! Jeter had coccidia also as a pup, the stress of a new home sometimes just lets it take over. Keep us posted!

My puppies were tested positive for LOTS of Coccidosis (spelling?) when they had their first puppy visit.  They never had any signs of it, though.  The vet up them on 14 days, 2x per day of the dewormer and they have not had any diarrhea or puking, and they are done with the de wormer.  I hope they are rid of the bugs.  I kind of thought that maybe they would have diarrhea or throwing up when the bugs came out and died, but I did not see ANYTHING in their poo and I checked for worms and bugs... I sure hope their gone!

What on Earth are Coccidia?

Coccidia are single celled organisms that infect the intestine. They are microscopic parasites detectable on routine fecal tests in the same way that worms are but coccidia are not worms and they are not visible to the naked eye. Coccidia infection causes a watery diarrhea which is sometimes bloody and can even be a life-threatening problem to an especially young or small pet.

Can People or Other Pets Become Infected?

While there are species of coccidia that can infect people (Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium, for example), the Isospora species of dogs and cats are not infective to people. Other pets may become infected from exposure to infected fecal matter but it is important to note that this is usually an infection of the young (i.e. the immature immune system tends to let the coccidia infection reach large numbers where the mature immune system probably will not.) In most cases, the infected new puppy or kitten does not infect the resident adult animal.

What are the symptoms of coccidiosis?

The primary sign of an animal suffering with coccidiosis is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be mild to severe depending on the level of infection. Blood and mucous may be present, especially in advanced cases. Severely affected animals may also vomit, lose their appetite, become dehydrated, and in some instances, die from the disease.

Most infected puppies encountered by the authors are in the four to twelve week age group. The possibility of coccidiosis should always be considered when a loose stool or diarrhea is encountered in this age group. A microscopic fecal exam by a veterinarian will detect the cysts confirming a diagnosis.

What are the risks?

Although many cases are mild, it is not uncommon to see severe, bloody diarrhea result in dehydration and even death. This is most common in animals who are ill or infected with other parasites, bacteria, or viruses. Coccidiosis is very contagious, especially among young puppies. Entire kennels may become contaminated, with puppies of many age groups simultaneously affected.

Update:

Koda is responding very well on her meds. She had her first vet checkup yesterday and the vet was very happy with her progress.  My 11yr old chi-apso Panda tested neg for coccidiosis but due to her age and that it takes two weeks after exposure for a positive reading she was placed on the medication too. They both are doing fine.
