I just started clipping Corona's nails on my own, well she has a few completely black ones. I was wondering IF I ever clip to far back what am I suposed to do? I HATE clipping her nails for this reason, but I have to learn right lol... Thanks in advance |

If you don't have syptic powder or sticks on hand, cornstarch or flour will do in a bind. I believe that the pets stores have the powder, but you may have to look in the bird area;-) Rachel |

| The Bamboo clippers I bought came with the styptic powder. You should be able to find it at pet stores. |

Good to keep stypic on hand - if you quick the nails they bleed like a son of a gun. We use a grinder (a small hand held battery operated dremel type tool) to do nails. Took some training (treat per nail etc) to get everyone used to it but we never have quicked nails (cut too short) and it's fast. |

| What about not clipping that far back? We were just at the vet this morning and asked about the black nails. She said to just clip the tip. You will have to trim more often, but that will avoid having bleeding nails. She cut about 3/16 inch off his dark nails and just a little itty bitty trim on Cameo's nails, less than 1/8 inch, more like 3/32. Our vet charges $13 for a nail clipping. We've always held Rattagan to do his rear paws, but he gets real squirmy. Given his knee surgery we've been reluctant to try holding him for fear of him hurting himself. On the vet's table it was very easy to do the front and the vet's assistant held him for the back ones. He is much calmer at the vet for some reason, he really likes this vet and she is so very good with all her patients. |

| WOW 13? My vet does it free, however sometimes it seems they just grow REALLY quick! So I decided to learn to do this lol. I have also heard the local petsmart will do it for free for certain ages, I think up to a certain age anyways. But out petsmart is a little out of the way lol |

| I have the Bamboo trimmers Sarah talked about. They have a little vial of styptic powder in the handle. Plus you can buy refills at the pet store in the area where you find the nail trimmers. I trim Rowdy's clear nails first and then use them as a judge for the black ones. Ask your vet to show you. They wil gladly give you some tips. I've gotten tips from both my sister (who used to be a vet tech) and my vet. They've shown me the best way to hold his paws plus how to gauge where the quick is based on the hollow part under the toenail. |

| I have to clip the toenails on my birds. I was advised that corn starch would stop the bleeding if you cut into the quick, but we had one that it didn't stop it and blood was dripping EVERYWHERE. I was advised to always keep a bar of soap nearby when clipping nails. If you cut too close, you can take the bar of soap and dig the nail into it. It stops the bleeding immediately. |

We trim both Batman and Blondie's nails and have done so since they were pups. We don't cut the black nails as far back, since we can't see the quick. I'd rather have to trim those a little more often than risk hurting one of the pups. And they do sell the powder everyone is talking about in the Pet Stores...I used to have some that was called "QuickStop". |
