Dora is almost 12 weeks. After getting her at 8 weeks, she had very foul smelling runny poop with a little blood at the end. I took her to the vet and they said could be the transition to new home and diet. I've been feeding her Royal canin puppy 33 wich was the closest to the food breeder used. She was dewormed and I gave her a little pepto and she has been pooping  ok. Soft serve ice cream is what I call it. I made the mistake of trying to switch to a new few gradually but she got the runs(her nickname has been leaky butt) and was gassy. I put her back on her food for about 3 days now and it is back to soft serve ice cream. She seems to have pretty good poops for the first couple a day but they tend to get runnier as the night progreses. She no longer has blood in stool and fecal test was negative.  I have started to add a little yogurt to her diet. 1/2 tsp in morning and with night feeding.

My questions are:

What should be the consistency of puppy poop?

How much yogurt should I be giving her?

i would love to hear any imputs as I seem to be obsessed with her poop.LOL

By the way, I try to keep her strictly on her food, but she finds every little twig, leave, stick, etc. she can eat.

Can this be upsetting her tummy? She goes to see the vet tomorrow for her 12 week shots and I will do another fecal exam but I am hoping for some feedback and imput from all you on this site. Love this site by the way.

Thank you!

Amy

Only thing I can help with is to tell you that (when our ground isn't snow covered) Yaz eats every twig, pinecone, grass, bug, EVERYTHING off the ground and inevetably ends up yaking or pooping it out. Aren't grass poos the best?

I've heard others here say to give them a little pumpkin puree to help with the runs. I haven't tried it, but they say it works great. I hope you are able to get some answers tomorrow at the vet.

JMO but I'd stick with the yogurt as pumpkin is supposed to be good fiber...makes 'em poop if they're constipated....

What kind of food are you feeding? JMO but I wouldn't feed anything with corn or wheat in it (ratties are prone to allergies and some are allergic these things.) Pick a high quality kibble and stick with it.

Solid Gold, Canidae, Wysong, try one of those if you can...once you get through transition (first week) the poops should be nice and firm and smaller too (bonus). Yogurt is good, a little pumpkin is ok too (works both ways, for loose or constipation). Also you can get dry acidophilus and grind it up in her food too as a digestive aid. If she still has issues she might still have coccidia or other worms despite the tests.

Have you tested for giardia sp? Our Lucy is just getting over it. Lots of runny and a little bloody. I have heard negative blood test are common.

I dropped of a poop sample today and they will specifically test for coccidia and giardia. Hopefully find out tomorrow. She is doing very well despite the loose stools. Very playful, good appetite and drinks a lot of water. I have her on her regular food and I added a teason of yogurt to her morning feed which she loves and I just added a little pumkin to her last feeding. i would say she is about 80% better than when we first got her about 4 weeks ago but she still has something that is still upsetting her tummy.any body used a holistic natural remedy for intestinal parasites? I've been reading about VIBACTRA PLUS . Sounds like a good preventive or aid with this parasite. anybody used this stuff?

She's fine other than her poop? She might have food allergies. I had an older male dobie mix who had loose stools, and when I switched him over to a grain-free kibble they were normal.
It's so hard to have a sick pup and not know how to help, but it sounds like you are doing a great job in helping her, if she's improved so much since you've gotten her.

Just got back from the vet and yes she tested positive for giardia . I am happy to have an answer for these symptoms. The pumpkin worked really well. Her morning poop was the firmest I've seen yet. She will start her meds on Tuesday seeing that the vet has to order some on Monday(kinda of a bummer). She got her 12 week old shots and she has gained 3 pounds in these 4 weeks we have had her. Very excited she is doing so well and that she will get better in the next week or so. Thanks for everyones input. I really appreciate all the information I read on this site.

When Corona had loose stool I had given her small amounts of PURE pumpkin. (a tip from members on here) I see you tried it and it worked well, i just want to warn you, incase you dont already know, make sure not to feed too much, too much can cause loose stool... I know its weird, but pumpkin can be used for both softening and hardening lol
