I got a puppy on Wednesday from a family who lives 2 hrs away, so I did not see their home..but appears to be on the level, etc...
Anyway... My little female RT checked out at the vet yesterday AM. Since then she has barely eaten which I chalked up to new environment,etc.. She is 10 weeks
I want to know if this is normal:
-not hyper at all...not interested in playing
-wants to be cuddled, will wag her tail, give kisses
-has thrown up a small amt of clear liquid mucus/water? 3 times in 36 hrs.. but will keep water down most of the time
-hard time eating her crunchy puppy food, so tried wetting it a bit, mixed in 1 tbs of canned to help, she basically licked off all the wet food and that was at least something
-but then had diarhea about 3 hrs later....just one episode of that...
-she has urinated about 6 times in the last 24hrs normally
Could this all be chalked up to puppy in new environment, new food, etc...? I am calling my vet as soon as they open to get her checked again this morning but I am a little worried. Our last puppy was our 14 yr weiner dog and I simply can't remember having this go on....
When do RT puppies get hyper?

| I would definitely contact the vet but she may just be adjusting. Maggie has a sensitive stomach...has since she was little. Every once in a while will get the bad belly and throw up or have the runnies! It may be nothing but with a puppy you don't want them to get dehydrated. She seems to being peeing ok which means she has something in her to pee. Puppies are weird and never predictable. Maggie wasn't hyper til she was like 13 or 14 weeks. All puppies like to sleep alot and want to be snuggled and kept warm...like being with their litter. I would just call and ask...they may tell you to keep an eye on her or maybe to bring her in. I hope she starts feeling better. At least she ate the wet food. She may have been hungry just not appetized by the dry food. That happens sometimes if they have a tummy ache. Good luck!! |

Well, I think it could be normal behavior...Buster shook for the first month that we had him, and really didn't warm up to the environment for about a month...They are so little and everything to them seems so big! I hope the vet says the same...Good luck! |

| I would chalk to decrease in appetite, not really playing and so on to anxiety and getting used to her new home. Some pups need time to adjust. The diarhhea could very well be from the new food, especially canned food. Make sure it doesn't get worse or look bloody at all. Otherwise I would keep an eye on her for now. You have to remember it only takes a little to fill these peanuts up. Are you giving her set feeding times? That may be best for now so you can know when she eats and also to keep her on a predictable potty schedule. My ratties were never really hyper. They love to play but they love to sleep more. It all depends on her individual personality. There are some that can be very energetic but overall this breed is happy as a lap dog too. Give her some time to adjust and I am sure she will open up soon. Welcome to the site. We LOVE pictures!!! |

She's just moved away from her mother and to a new home, she's probably quiet and wants to be reassurred and loved on for that reason. She's also very young. Don't worry - she will get playful! Not all ratties are hyper either so I wouldn't worry about that as long as she is physically ok. She is probably also adjusting to the new food (is it a different food than the other home fed her?). That can cause the diarhea. Give her a tiny bit of plain yogurt for that if it's bad. The clear mucus is just bile from her tummy, could be from not eating much. As long as she's drinking water and not dehydrated I wouldn't worry too much, especially since you've had her checked out at the vet. She will eat when she gets hungry enough. A word of caution - don't fall into the trap of giving her people food to tempt her to eat. She will keep wanting that and not her food! Good luck with her. Do you have pictures? |

Welcome to the site. I'm glad you found us. You will not find a better place anywhere for rat terrier information! I would follow up with the vet again to make certain, but agree it's likely a change of environment and food. Even different water can take a while for some dogs to get used to. As long as the vet is giving her an all clear as far as her health goes, I would just give her some time. I do seem to remember Daisy doing the clear liquid throw up quite a bit when she first came home too. Looking forward to hearing all about your new baby girl. What's her name? And we most DEFINITELY want to see some pics |

Call your vet and let her know what's going on. It seems pretty normal to me, however if it keeps up for more than a couple of days then I'd really start getting worried. Nibbler was like that when we first got him. As soon as we brought him inside to the kitchen he promptly threw up everything that was in his stomach. She may have diarreah if you changed her food. Do you know what they were feeding her before? Try giving her a little bit of yogurt (plain) or a small spoon of pumpkin (canned, not the pie filling), and that should help. She'll become more playful as she gets to know you, take it as a good sing that she wants to cuddle and is not hiding |

I agree with the above, it's probably an adjustment period -- BUT, since you just saw the vet - I think you should call and ask that question. Check for dehydration by pinching her skin - if it returns to normal, she is not dehydrated and if it stays pinched up or returns very slowly she is. You can always check her temp to with a rectal thermometer - around 101 is normal for a dog.
But, again, there is nothing wrong with picking up the phone and asking the question - and it would reassure you also.
Keep us posted. |

WELCOME!! I am so glad oyu found us! I think you will love it here and I cant wait to see pics of your baby! Look forward to getting to know you! Now.... Is she drinking normally?? I am not trying to be neagtive, but when we got Trixi, she ate ok and only had 1-2 episodes of diahrea and threw up only in the car ride...i went with my gut and got her tested for Parvo just incase and she HAD IT....so.... I am just saying this because I dont want to scare you but, I know that young pups have a MUCH better chance of making a recovery from parvo if its caught early..i dont know...just me being slightly paranoid FOR YOU... |

Thanks to everyone responding! I feel better...like it is normal and her just getting used to us. The vet gave me some food to try for today and just said to keep an eye on her... I will just keep loving her and let her adjust. I am thrilled to have found this site. I am going to post pictures later today as soon as I figure it out! My little girl's name is Ruby and she is just a little peanut. So look for a pic of little Ruby later today.
Thanks everyone! |

I'm glad the vet confirmed that little Ruby is just fine New puppy owners sometimes need a lot of reassurance (like new parents) I KNOW I DID And vets are used to it. My Daisy was my first ever "brand new" puppy so I had a LOT of questions!! Can't wait to see her and I'm sure you'll be posting in a few days that all is going well, and asking about her "new issues" like running laps at awesome speeds, burrowing under the covers, is it ok that she doesn't bark much, ....mmmmm, what else am I forgetting guys? LOL!!! You may want to read the "You might be a rat terrier if...." Forum to get a heads up on what to expect |

Hello, I just adopted a 3 year old Rattie from the SPCA. I am glad to hear another owner talking about killing stuffed animals (by ripping the squeekers out) That seems to be my little guys favorite game. If a toy has a squeeker, he carries it around with him everywhere. Then one day pieces are found in every room and that toy meets it's maker!!

Anyway... My little female RT checked out at the vet yesterday AM. Since then she has barely eaten which I chalked up to new environment,etc.. She is 10 weeks
I want to know if this is normal:
-not hyper at all...not interested in playing don't worry... she will adjust.. braeli was lik ethat for about 4 days. she is still less active than bryson.
-wants to be cuddled, will wag her tail, give kisses that is very normal... she is starting to adjust and "trust" you.
-has thrown up a small amt of clear liquid mucus/water? 3 times in 36 hrs.. but will keep water down most of the time no food... she is hungry... braeli will vomit clear when she is very very hungry!
-hard time eating her crunchy puppy food, so tried wetting it a bit, mixed in 1 tbs of canned to help, she basically licked off all the wet food and that was at least something change of food is hard... what did the feed her before... she should be weened off of that onto other stuff. dogs acquire tastes and if the dry food isnt as good to her as the wt she wint eat it. try water and heating the dry food for 20 secs in the micro!
-but then had diarhea about 3 hrs later....just one episode of that... nerves/stress from change.
-she has urinated about 6 times in the last 24hrs normally alot of water = alot of peepee... lol puppies pee alot as is.
Could this all be chalked up to puppy in new environment, new food, etc...? I am calling my vet as soon as they open to get her checked again this morning but I am a little worried. Our last puppy was our 14 yr weiner dog and I simply can't remember having this go on....
everything seems normal. stand tough and stick with it... she will come around.

| Welcome Julianne. You've been given excellent advice. I think she's adjusting to new home, new food, new people. That puts a lot of stress on them, and stress can dull appetite, cause diarrhea and a bit of mucous/water to be spat up or in their stools. If they told you what food she was on, I'd feed that at first, so as not to upset her digestive tract too much. Then gradually add a bit of whatever you want to feed her. That transition to a new food should be done very gradually, though. |

Well, a very warm and sunny Arizona welcome to you and your pup! Can't wait to see Ruby's picture. I think you have gotten some sage advice in earlier posts so I will refrain from repeating.....sounds pretty normal to me. Just keep an eye on her. She'll come around before you know it!
