Has anyone ever tried one of these on their ratty?
http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/15082/
Here's my situation. Buddy doesn't tolerated collars. He keeps his necked scratched raw almost to the bleeding point. I have tried every kind of collar out there, even silk. Now he is wearing a regular harness that comes around his chest instead of neck. Things were good until I noticed a raw spot under his armpit from the harness. This particular harness claims to be very comfortable and even has padding, but I hate to spend $40 before hearing from people who have tried them.
If it works well and is worn well, I would love to try it out. So far, it's driving me nutty to find something that he will tolerate . I can't really leave him "naked" because he does slip out on rare occasion, and I like him having id tags, even though he is also chipped. I also have a 40 foot tie out that both dogs go on for their bathroom breaks, so they need to wear something to hook to. (I'm a bit of a worry wart.)
Thanks for any input |

| Is he allergic to those collars, or just has a high irritation for those things? I am new with my ratty and have heard that they are pretty allergitic to things. So far I havn't found any allergies in my doggy, but am looking for signs. I would say just put on the harnest when needed, but you said he gets out sometimes... I have not personally used these harnest, just the regular one from Wal mart. Good luck hopefully someone has used it and can give you some feedback! |

Thanks y'all. I have looked at the Puppia harnesses online and can't quite get a good fix on them from the pictures. Are they sturdy enough for a little powerhouse type B? I've looked around the pet stores here for that brand but haven't found any, just the ones on line.
I think that his problem is that he is just hypersensitive and not necesarily allergic to the items. After putting them on grain free, he stopped itching except for under his neck while wearing a collar. I even found one made from hemp with no dyes in it thinking that he was allergic, he still dug.
The harness that he has on now seems to be rubbing a raw spot under his "armpit", but he is not actually digging at it that me or hubby have seen. |

Note:he didn't start having a problem with collars until he hit about the 1 1/2yr old mark(adulthood). He's 2 1/2 now. |

I ordered Mikey and Alice a Puppia harness a couple of weeks ago. I was so excited because Alice will choke herself when I take her out. (She likes to chase leaves when the wind is blowing!) Anyway, I got the harnesses, put them on, took Alice out first and I loved it. Then I took Mikey out, went back inside, and Alice had ALREADY chewed a hole in the front of her harness, Didn't wear it 10 minutes! I was disappointed but couldn't get mad at her....Oh well, put her collar back on. At least she can't chew on it. I love the way it feels and Mikey will wear his. |

I use a Puppia harness on Skipper who is built like a really hefty type B (he's a chi/corgi mix and weighs 15 pounds). It stands up to the stress of him pulling quite well. He has pulled out of going backwards but I think that may be because it fits him weirdly...loose around the front part and then tighter around the girth. |

Thanks again for the input. Vickie-I'm glad you mentioned the part about Alice chewing on hers. I could see Buddy trying something like that! LOL He's such a rascal. I'm going to try the "Ruff Wear" one and see how it works. The company has a good return policy if it doesn't. The only thing that bothers me about it is the rear strap (near the rear belly). If it wears well, I think that I could do some "surgery" on it and remove the rear portion. I don't see that it's needed on smaller dogs anyway. If not, I may still try the Puppia brand. I did come across another harness made from imitation lamb skin that looked almost ideal, but it will only fit up to 13-14 dogs. That rules mr. chunky out by about 3 lbs! |

It's not a good idea to keep a harness on a dog 24/7...they can get caught on more things and get trapped since they can't slip out of it as easliy as a collar. But it does look great for walks/car rides. I got Lupine harnesses for my girls. What I like about them is if the dog chews the harness up, you can send it back and get a new one for free! Came in handy with Molly...I had the harness out of the box and on her for less than 20 minutes and she chewed it up. Sent it back and a week later (much to Molly's dismay) she had a brand new harness. |

Thanks Lisabeth,
I know what you mean. I'm also not crazy about leaving a harness on him all of the time. I hate for him to be tagless though. He is very quick and has been known to slip out the dooor and bolt, especially with hubby and my youngest daughter when she brings my grandson over. Even though they both have chips, I worry about them getting back home. (actually, my biggest worry is getting hit by a car). I've been working on commands, and he is getting better with "come". But, you know how ratties are-once they get outside and get the prey-drive thing going....look out;-)
I wish that I could come up with a better solution than a harness. It breaks my heart to see what he does to his neck when he is wearing a collar. So far, he has done good with the harness that is on him as far as not messing with it and is calm around the house most of the time. And, surprisingly, he doesn't dig at it like he does with collars.
But, I do agree, there is room for his getting into trouble with it. I'm still going to keep looking for a better solution.
Maybe I should get his ear tagged like livestock and wildlife! Yikes-just kidding ;-) |

Good luck with the harness! I've never seen one like that before. However, if you try the Puppia, you won't need to worry about it holding up to use... Rowdy wears a Puppia harness sometimes and it holds up against all 25(typeA)lbs! He has pulled on it a couple times and I haven't had any issues. It seems to be really comfortable for him. (At least, I haven't had any complaints... ) |

| Could you maybe just let him wear a regular collar with his tags while inside? that way he wouldn't have to wear the harness all the time. |

He just can't tolerate collars at all. He keeps his neck (underneath) scratched raw. Iv'e tried all kinds of different collars, even tried a silk one, hemp with no dyes, etc... This started when he was about 1 1/2 yrs (adulthood) old. It seemed better when I switched them to grain free. He quit scratching all together. The next thing that I knew, he was tearing his neck up again. Ugh... Anyway, he seems to be tolerating the harness that's on him now, other than it seems to be rubbing a raw place under his front leg. I'm trying to find something wearable and safe. Right now, his neck is healed up and there is hair growth. So, that's a good thing :-) |

| When I bought my Puppia Harness I looked on ebay and they had quite a few different models to choose one. Charlie hasent chewed his up yet even though he has tried. I dont think he could when it was on him if the fit was right but that may be different for other dogs. |

Thanks Erica I'm going to check there. I recieved the harness from the above original post and it's going back. The style is great for larger breed dogs, but there is too much bulk and gaps for Buddy to stay out of trouble with it! LOL It would be so much easier if he would just wear a collar and leave his neck alone. Back to the drawing board ;-) |
