In Toa's fosterhome with his littermates, one of the pups came back positive for mange....they scraped Toa a couple weeks before we got him because he was going through an "ugly" phase and had lost some hair on his head....he came back negative....

Mom just got back from the vet with Lily and just called me and said that Lily tested positive for mange today.  She said that there were some red "rashy" sports on Lily and the vet could tell right away.

SO, with the knowledge that two of his littermates have come up positive for mange, should i get him scraped no matter what?

When I took him to the vet yesterday and asked the vet about it, I explained that his hair is looking better since hes been home with us and we changed his food and everything.  She shrugged her shoulders , of course...LOL...and she said to keep an eye on it and if it seems to be getting worse bring him in for a scrape...I asked her what SHE thought and she said the same thing.....part of me wishes she would have just suggested i get it done yesterday "just incase"...

his skins looks fine except for a few tiny marks from Trixi and him wrestling....his hair loss SEEMS to be improving....his hair is looking thicker and healthier....but its also so thick that we cant see his skin very well, which is how my mom coudl tell, by the pink skin on Lilys head and neck....

What do you guys think?

Hmmm...personally, Mary, I would go ahead and ask if you could just run him in and have a scraping done and they can let you know. I'm assuming mange is one of those things best dealt with as early as possible?

i think so Tracey...it kinda ticks me off cause i called to ask about the price...jsut out of curiousity if we decided to get it done...and they said we would most likely pay for an office visit for that in addition to the scrape...a little silly considering we were tehre yesterday for a check up...maybe ill see if they will not charge that fee....
i will pay whatever, its not about the money, its just the principle that she didnt recommend it to beign with.....and now we would be paying an additional visit fee

I wouldn't worry about it.  Mix up a little peroxide/borax and sponge it on and see if that helps.  They very well could have sold you a couple hundred dollars worth of mange cure so count yourself lucky.  Granted, they could at least acknowledge your concerns with an explanation, but if I were you I'd save the money and buy some Seapet fish oil instead.  It's probably the best thing you could do, for both your dogs health.

REALLY???
They very well could have sold you a couple hundred dollars worth of mange cure so count yourself lucky.

youre totally right....i guess i was being protective of my babies! hehe....but yes, they were not trying to get me to spend money if it was unneeded...i guess i could give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that if she thought he may have it, she would have reccomended a scrape....thanks for the better perspective!!

hmmm Seapet fish oil....sorry if i sound dumb...but where would i find that?
should i do the peroxide/borax AND the seapet fish oil?
great information!! thanks so much!

I get the Seapet 200 with/E from their website.  http://www.seapet.com/Oil.htm#omega3E

I would use the peroxide/borax if you notice bald spots.  If it is just thinning, and getting better like you said, I wouldn't bother.

Yup, I agree with Ski. the borax solution won't hurt and in general once these pups get older their immune systems fight it off just fine. If you said he didn't look any better or it was worse I might think more about it but I would say at this point ot wait it out. Jeter has some missing hair on the top of his head too, negative for mange also. Maybe it's a blue pup thing? I don't know. We do the fish oils also.

Mary, I think Cameo may have the mange too. I noticed some places on her face this morning out in the bright sun light and below her left eye and the left side of her face I am seeing pink places and the hair seems to be gone off of those places. I called my vet a few minutes ago after I found that and she has to go in Monday for mange treatment. My vet said it was highly contagious and she needed to be treated before Ratty gets it too. As if he needs more after surgery. I'll let you know how it goes Monday. I'm calling Caroline now. Caroline is busy but will call me back later. Thanks for letting me know about this so I could be watching Cameo and Rattagan.

I don't understand the theory behind Ratty getting it. Demodex mange is very rarely contagios to an older dog. Puppies and dogs with weakend immune system are at risk, but an adult dog should not get it. Usually if they do, there is an underlying issue.

God Sarah I hope and pray you're right. He's never had anything like that and I don't want him too either. I don't think they know what kind of mange it is since they haven't seen her for that yet. But it just started showing up in her little wrinkles on her face. I didn't really see it until I had her out in the sun. It is not as serious as knee surgery or other things but I still worry, you know how that is. Let one little bitty thing seem to be wrong with my babies and I go nuts. I just hope I'm over-reacting. Thanks, your words will make it a little easier to wait until Monday. I don't know how weakened Ratty's system may be after surgery 3 weeks ago. But he seems to be fine.

I wouldn't get treatment from the vet.  She's still getting puppy vaccinations isn't she?  That can trigger the demodectic mange.  I would seriously doubt that it's sarcoptic (contagious) mange.  I'd just keep an eye on it and if it spreads, try the peroxide/borax before letting the vet treat it.

My mother's jack russels terriers, all ended up with mange.  My mother even ended up with it .    The dogs received shots and my mother was treated with a topical ointment.  All soft surfaces must be treated in the home.  The mites that burrow under the skin and cause the rash can live in carpets for three to four days.  I researched this stuff big time.  It is nasty, nasty , nasty. My mother was banned from visiting me.  My sister had her dogs and house treated just because she took one of her dogs to my mother's before they knew it was mange.  Mange is nasty, it must be treated early and hard.

Eyedr30 - this must have been the sarcoptic mange, correct? That IS the way it acts. The other members were talking about demodectic mange.

Correct, it was sarcoptic mange.  I didnt think that they were sure what they had yet.  It's just that my mom let it get out of control and I wouldnt want anyone else to.

I've dealt with sarcoptic mange with my minpin.  It started as hair thinning around the little wrinkles in his forehead.  He was a very sickly baby and so his immune system couldn't fight it.  Anyway, we(all who held him close) did get it.  We started itching and getting little red bumps.  We had to put this poison lotion all over our bodies...then my dad had a reaction to that...He was so funny...he was a true southerner and had been a farmer as a boy...he said, "I've been around dogs my whole life and never had a problem, but you bring this little sick rat to me and now I've got the mange!!"  He was not my Bruno-boy's biggest fan

Bruno suffered with skin conditions pretty much the rest of his life.  Good luck and I hope that these puppies all get better.

Cameo appears to be doing better. The vet put her on Ivermectin(sp) for 2 weeks. I would not let them dip her which was the first thing they said. It is NOT the contagious kind. She is losing her fur but it doesn't seem to itch very much. She goes to see the vet on Saturday and we'll know how it goes then. Thanks for all your help it helped keep me from worrying myself sick.
