Hi group!
I haven't been here in a long time so I need to do some catch up.
I broke my leg right before Thanksgiving and holidays came and went for me and Princess like just another day. Oh well, Valentine's day is tomorrow and maybe we can celebrate them all then!
I need everyone's help, I posted here quite awhile ago about Nutro Natural Choice food and how good I thought all the ingredients were as I scowered the interenet during the food recall because I was so terrified that something was wrong with my Princess. Vet bill ended up to be over $200 with all the tests and nothing showed up.
I have been feeding the Nutro since I got her as a pup as the food store I purchased it at recommended it highly. Started off with Lamb & Rice, tried Sensitive Stomach Oatmeal and finally now Venison.
All this time she still throws up (just not like she used to, whole meals at a time) mostly saliva. And ear infections, skin scratching, hair falls out worse than a cat sheds. Now I noticed her urine is kind of colored also. Vet never said nothing about foods but it didn't matter since any Vet that would have Hills Science diet on display I would not take recommendations from anyway!
I stopped last week on my way home to get more food only at a different branch of the pet food store I usually buy at. I talked with the gals there and there usually is at least one Vet Tech working. So she overheard me talking about Nutro and piped up that she would not feed that to her dog since she visited their plant. I was in total shock as I ws sure I investigated every ingredient and would not jepordise my Princess's health for anything.
She pointed out that Nutro has wheat in it and that is just one highly allergic ingredient. Of course I have come to the conclusion that Princess has allergies! I had no idea that the food they eat can cause not only allergies but these nasty ear infections too! She is back to having scabs in her ears from scratching so much, poor baby.
Okay, I will get to the point here... I am never going to buy again ANY food that imports their ingredients from another country, never, EVER!
I don't know about all of you but my dog is just like my own baby, and I would not feed her something that has any possibility of the unknown.
She suggested Canidae, but I had heard or seen on a list that Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance was at the top of the list.
Yes expensive, but price doesn't matter any more, I can eat peanut butter and jelly for awhile! lol
Low and behold I get the food home along with a small bag of her original food and guess what? I find Natural Balance part of the old recall list. I am really steaming now, and going to return it since it is not opened yet. Now don't get me wrong, I agree that if your dog is doing good on a food that they have been eating forever, well I wouldn't change either. In fact a friend of mine that has a Jack Russell has always fed her Eukanuba and I would not.
So I want to know everyone's expert opinion on what works for them.
I do know that I won't buy some that have been rated at the top of the list like; Kirkland, Royal Canin & Natural Balance since these were on the recall list. The one's I have heard of that are NOT on the list and I am trying to decide since I know nothing about are: Canidae, Innova, Solid Gold, Bil Jac, Eagle. Does anyone know anything about Chicken soup? I know when I had a cat I fed him that but I am wondering.
Sorry for so much reading here, I am really desperate for an answer and would so appreciate all of your help since I trust your judgement.
Thank you all in advance for taking the time, I would be heartbroken without my Princess Lily!

I fed Canidae for a while and I have nothing but good things to say about that brand. The only downside is that it is a bit bland, so I'd suggest mixing rice and/or boiled chicken in with it every once in a while. I used to make 2 cups of rice, some ground turkey, and a little bit of garlic powder (helps repell fleas) and Nibbler ate it up. |

Natural Balance had it's venison formula recalled but not the other products. Nutro switched owners over to Mars which owns some of the lesser dog food brands...so I imagine the quality has gone down. Regardless, of the ones you mention Canidae, Innova, SOlid Gold and Eagle Pack are good. Bil Jac...do they have good food without corn, wheat, filler, dyes, etc? |

I've fed Canidae and mine ate it fine but they just weren't thrilled about it. Solid Gold - certain flavors of that they really loved. Haven't tried Innova but it's supposed to be really good. My Mayfly has bad allergies and I'm feeding NB duck/potato now, she's doing well on it. |

Yes, and that is the kind I would buy is the venison. I didn't know that Nutro switched owners? Wow, learn something new every day! All I know is after 2 years and only getting worse it is time for a change!
I do have the bag still in my car of the NB duck & potatoe, is it supposed to be good for the allergies?
I don't know anything about Bil Jac, it is one that the food store carries is why I mention it. Maybe someone else here will know?
Thank you for your imput! |

So i switched to NB Ultra Formula and I love it because it is for all life stages so I dont have to buy two different foods for my 1 year old and our new puppy. I might switch to Evo soon but its kind of hard to find in my area so we are going to stick with it for now. |

I am seriously thinking of doing that after I hear how good it is, I just hate to upset her tummy if I don't have to. She is also a food hog as anything she gets in her bowl she inhales so I know she just may push her old food aside and pick out the new. Is NB the most expensive food out there, do you know? |

I didn't know that, I know of many people who give their dogs just rice and chicken when in doubt because of their touchy stomachs. That is even what the Vet recommends is either beef or chicken and rice when I made her food during the recall!
Thanks so much for your input!!

I haven't found any of the high quality foods to be hard on their tummies. And I even switch them "cold turkey" instead of slowly. I have a whippet who has a very sensitive tummy and she's done fine too with any of the good foods. I do know that when a dog has little diarhea or vomiting chicken and rice is one thing you can feed to get them eating again....I usually prefer plain yogurt first myself. But of course that is for dogs who aren't allergic to chicken or rice....a little tummy upset is different from food allergy. Oh, also, don't think Natural Balance is the most expensive but check around. It's convenient from me to get because Petco carries it. |

You are lucky with no allergies! I just stopped giving mine homemade stuff since I found out and she is protesting BIG TIME! She will snatch food right out of our hands or plate! It is going to be a big problem with her behavior not giving in to her as she rules the house and wants to eat with us and our food also! I just have to find a food that is going to work for her first and narrow down the allergies!

| We feed NB Duck and Potato here too, great for allergies. I would stick with a allergy food at least...one protein/one carb. Also stick with the uncommon proteins (duck, rabbit, venison) less chance of allergies that way and feed for at least 3 months with nothing else. Treats should be made with the same proteins, if they are allergic to something and you still give them treats containing that ingredient you won't be able to tell if the food switch helped. |

| You've gotten some great advice I've feed NB in the past and my dogs did well on it. I'm using Merrick right now and they do well too with it. I found the NB to be reasonably priced, at least here. Other brands, like Solid Gold and others are more expensive than NB. |

I want to thank you all for your great advice. Since NB seemed to be the #1 choice on the board and I already have a bag I am going to give it a shot.
The bag I have is a new formula the L.I.D limited ingredient diet sweet potatoe & venison. It is only a 15 lb. bag and was $26. I used to pay that for a 40lb bag of Nutro. I hope to see some improvement on the itching and anything aside from that is just the icing on the cake.
Now I know from all of your advice what the allergic ingredients are to look for. I would like to also try in the future Solid Gold, Wellness and maybe others since I will be more confident in the brand.
I hope that NB also makes treats, I had found some from a fellow Ebayer that has her own bakery, but that will only be a special treat once in a great while. I can see where the treat would play a big part also with allergies.

| Just remember it can take up to 12 weeks for all the symptoms to go away if in fact it is a food allergy, so give it time. Make sure if you switch to one of the other food after this bag, you want to stick with the same ingredients. My boys love the duck and potato treats too! |
